23rd Century2272 The Bajoran wormhole again undergoes subspace inversion. According to the "Voyager's" holographic doctor, bleeding in the brain would leave a patient crippled for life during this era's level of medical technological development. 23 January The construction of 43 "Tikopai" class ships is authorized. January Medium speed drones become available in general service. Limited Aegis systems are deployed. The UFP launches the first new dreadnought early in the year (probably the "Star League" class new technology dreadnought upgrade from the "Federation" class). Guided weapons destroyers, light carriers, fast carriers, F-4 "Phantom" and F-8 "Crusader" fighters are all in service. The F-4 carries two Type 1 and two Type 6 fighter and shuttle-killer drones in addition to a forward point defense phaser. The F-8 only carries two Type 1 drones and a forward point defense phaser. With the general availability of medium speed drones, the loss of the photon torpedoes is considered acceptable and the guided weapons destroyers are again in full production. In Spring, the command cruiser "Nimitz" (NCC-1951) is converted into a carrier (CCV) and operated within the Home Fleet until next year when it will be assigned to the Romulan border flying F-4s early in its career. The light scout cruiser (NAnd the Children Shall Lead (TOS)) is a conversion of the galactic survey cruiser USS "Discovery" (NCC-2001) allowing it to carry F-4 "Phantoms" in an enlarged hangar bay. The first light carriers will also be used for the initial demonstrations of fighter /carrier technology to the Gorn. While the UFP is the first power to launch a dreadnought on the Near Side, the Klingons and the Tholians will follow with their own dreadnoughts. As tensions begin to mount along the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone, one of the key areas of tension is the Adanerg system. Early in the year the Klingons decided to attempt to seize it with a minimum-force assault. The F5G commando frigate "Senior Sergeant Korl" was sent to eliminate the Federation colony. The UFP, detecting the attack and wanting to respond with similar force, sent out the commando frigate USS "Kripney." After a fierce skirmish, the Klingons are forced to concede control of Adanerg to the Federation, at least for the time being. Deth O'Kay's Orion cruiser "Hammerfield," and another Orion Q-ship, attack UFP convoys. The Tholians deploy a dreadnought by welding together the hulls of three patrol corvettes. The Klingons launch the C8 dreadnought on the Kzinti border, and the C9 dreadnought on the Federation border. While launched simultaneously, the C8 proves to be the better dreadnought, though the design is nearly the same as the C9, save for the C8 being armed with six drone racks instead of four, and having two extra defensive phasers in place of the offensive phasers, and adding four point defense phasers for use against enemy drones and fighters. The loss of the cargo bay on the C8 for extra fire- power is accepted as satisfactory. The Klingons launch the Z-1 assault fighter for use against enemy ships. This is the first fighter fielded by the Zegurnii Design Bureau for starship combat, and will also be made available to the Lyran Star Empire (the Lyrans will field only Klingon fighter designs for many decades). The Z-1, code-named the "Zoran," will become infamous in reputation, carrying two Type 1 ship killing drones and a forward defensive phaser of the type generally mounted on large Klingon ships. Dissatisfied with the carrier tug, the Klingons convert several D6 battlecruisers into carriers. The D6V, unlike most other races fleet carriers, carries only 10 fighters in two bays. The Klingons will soon regret the 2 fighters the D6V lacked when the ship first sees combat against another carrier. Several F5 frigates will be chosen to be con- verted to F5V light carriers, and used in escort and fleet support duties. These carry only 8 fighters, and will be found to be unsatisfactory in the future. Ardak Kumerian serves as commander of the 2nd Fighting Division. He destroys the Tholian 3rd Patrol Squadron after it forms the first Tholian Pinwheel, and is promoted to Commodore in charge of the Tholian Harassment Squadron, aboard his flagship "Darkslayer." Ardak Kumerian leads a Klingon task force against Tholian base station Argon, which was attempting to upgrade to battle station status and had already placed a web field around the station, with 18 large asteroids for anchorage. Base station Argon, under Wing Commander Sectin's authority, holds six "Spider-1" fighters in a hangar bay module, using three Federation cargo pods, and a power module with two small freighters docked to the station. In the outermost layers of the web (providing power to it) were the heavy cruiser "Arrrakk," and three patrol corvettes: "Fortress," "Palisade," and "Wall." The Tholians were expecting trouble from the Klingons in the form of this "demonstration attack" and had their first dreadnought, "Defender," under Commodore Brezgonne, patrol corvette escort "Shielder," and the "Black Widow" carrier "Desolation" out on patrol. The Klingon task force was assigned to make a "demonstration" against the Tholians by destroying the station. Ardak Kumerian did not know that the Tholian dreadnought and escorts would arrive back at the station in 15 minutes (as they had detected the approach of the Klingon force). Commodore Kumerian uses the Harrassment Squadron's other ships (two D7 battlecruisers and two F5 frigates) to conduct a deception operation to lure possible reinforcements away from the base he intended to attack. Still at his disposal are the D7 "Decimator," D6 "Bloodshedder," D6 "Destruction," F5C (frigate leader) "Fire Leader," F5V (light carrier) "Fire Carrier" with eight "Zoran" Z-1 fighters, F5S (scout frigate) "Fire Hunter," E3E carrier escort "Omen," E4 escort "Adamant," and E4 escort "Obdurate," in addition to the com- modore's own D7C command cruiser "Darkslayer." Kumerian is criticized for not sending the lower quality ships on the deception mission and using the better ships against the base. He was unaware that a dreadnought and carrier were covering the base. In a blood-curdling battle which suddenly becomes a wild melee with the arrival of the Tholian dreadnought, Kumerian destroys the station. Commodore Brezgonne succeeds in evacuating the remaining Tholian ships, losing two patrol corvettes in the battle and sustaining heavy damage to the dreadnought. Kumerian loses both E4s, and both of the D6s are badly damaged. It is, however, a small price to pay to destroy the Tholian base station. Captain Krilt of the "Decimator" thinks Kumerian was insane to have ordered such an attack, incompetent to have misdeployed his forces, and a coward to have not followed the retreating Tholian force. He will desperately seek any transfer available and will accept a special mission into Romulan space, where his ship will be destroyed in another wild melee, this time with Romulan, Gorn, and Fed- eration ships. Krait will survive the battle and go on to command the penal frigate "Forsaken." Thelvis Kren, an officer under Kumerian's command, starts an incident with the Tholians which backfires. Needing a scapegoat to quiet UFP complaints, the Klingon Empire picks Kumerian. He is stripped of his position as Commodore, but allowed to keep the rank of Captain and is given command of his original ship, the D6 "Destruction." The ship is sent to the Western Fleet on the Hydran border. Korath replaces Kumerian in command of the Tholian border squadron. The Lyrans begin using Klingon Z-1 assault fighters. Over the next three years they will begin deploying Expanding Sphere Generator Capacitors (a spin-off of technology designed to make the Hydran Hellbore less effective against more resistant EThe Squire of Gothos (TOS)s). The Lyran Democratic Republic launches its first military police scout, considered to be a superior electronic warfare unit. Also christened is their first war cruiser, "Chairman Pathau," converted from the LDR destroyer "Politburo." This war cruiser packs a significant punch, considering that its point defense phasers are replaced with gatling phasers, and its defensive phasers are replaced with offensive phasers. The Romulans continue to receive their first D7 battlecruisers from the Klingons, and begin oper- ating the K7R on the Federation border. These operate as a single squadron under Romulan Commander Dion Charvon. It is from this squadron that the Federation will manage the theft of a cloaking device. The Romulans attempt, with Klingon help, to ambush the Gorn heavy cruiser "Reptilicon" but the plan fails when the UFP command cruiser USS "Lexington" (NCC-1703) shows up and intervenes. It is in this fight that Klingon Captain Krait's ship is blown out from under him. Plasma-using races stop using the old MRS shuttles. The Andromedan "Rattler" class satellite commando ship is first spotted in the Milky Way. This ship is able to land on planets and field its robot marines. Two Kzinti frigates (one now owned by the WYN) fight at the edge of the WYN Star Cluster. The Kzinti begin producing Carrier pods for their tugs, leading to the threat of Kzinti carrier tugs against Lyran and Klingon forces. They also launch an improved fighter which can guide its own drones and the FFK frigate leader, which does not suffer the problems of shock which the FH heavy frigate did, having replaced the forward phaser array with a second dis- ruptor. Still, the chief weapons on the FFK are the four drone racks. The FFK is considered a "killer" refit of the standard frigate. The Kzinti start construction of their first dreadnought. The Argonian "Nova" class dreadnought is given a refit. Cutbacks in production of the "Typhoon" heavy cruisers yield the first "Monsoon" class light cruisers. The Frax war destroyer escort, carrier, and dreadnought enter service in the Kaltic Free States. The Klingons (concerned that the UFP might intervene in a second Four-Powers war and outraged that the Lyrans had effectively changed the Coalition plan) want the Lyrans to attack (the Kzinti) first. Both the Lyrans and Klingons begin a massive military buildup over the next year. The Kzinti are engaged in their own buildup, deploying their new carriers as rapidly as possible, and launch their dreadnought about this time. Increased military activity during this period results in a succession of small patrol actions along the Lyran- Kzinti and Klingon-Kzinti borders. The Klingons receive "Mauler" technology from the Romulans. The ISC's medium cruiser is launched: a And the Children Shall Lead (TOS) hull with a plasmatic pulsar device and two Gorn-style plasma weapons (Plasma G). The Hydran refitted "Inspector" police flagship (INS+) and "Thoroughbred" fast cruiser (THR, a "Dragoon" variant) are launched. The homeworld of the Sattar Collective is conquered by the Klingon Empire. March Sorahl of Vulcan dies. Teilani is reportedly born on Chal during this era, although considering her genetics her exact age is difficult to compute. 07 April In the "Mirror" universe, Spock turns against Emperor Tiberius. In a bloodless coup, Spock becomes Subcommander of the empire and Tiberius escapes. The first of Spock's many reforms is the abolishment of the Emperor position and the establishment of a democratic governing body modeled on Spock's mind meld memories of the UFP taken from McCoy's mind a decade earlier. 27 April May The heavy cruisers of the "Tikopai" class are named from the star catalog of May 2272. Originally the vessels would have been named for various Federation statesmen of recent history. 13 May 15 May The "Enterprise" shuttlecraft "Halley" is lost within the Hohweyn system with her senior officers aboard, and eventually recovered without incident. 30 May Tuvok begins his study of Violence. The "Pelican" class heavy fleet support vessel USS "Penguin" records a record of 5,231 accident-free days--the best safety record of any fleet support vessel. Zaidan, the son of Kozara, is born in the Klingon Empire during this period. 22 June 25 June Permission is granted for the Chiokis shipyards to modify the ("Knox" class??) frigate USS "Southampton" to meet Andorian construction specs. Using an extended hull mount for the engines, resembling the Andor missile cruiser, this prototype will evolve into a new frigate class. Although computer models had shown an increase in efficiency, test runs with the "Southampton" prove anything less than exemplary. Modifications, which placed the dual drive system above the main hull, created problems in the impulse drive system and the first attempt is scrapped. The second attempt places the engines directly aft of the main hull, proves more successful combat-wise, but places such a restriction on the landing bay that the design is also rejected. Finally a specially modified roll bar is used on the last prototype, the "Pharris," to mount the engines under the main hull. A powerful and highly maneuverable frigate results, capable of prolonged patrol and high speed combat. stardate 2213.5 The USS "LaGrange" (NCC-1447) "Feynman" class research cruiser is decommissioned. August 07 August During the Kzinti Incursion, the Kzinti occupy several planets in the Galen and Jouret systems. The populations of these planets undergo various extremes of deprivation, terror, and even deportation as slave laborers. Starfleet Marines make opposed landings on each of the Kzinti-held planets. The operations are ultimately successful in freeing the planets from Kzin domination, but planetary defensive fire claims nearly a dozen assault shuttles during these landings. In the wake of these losses, Major General K'tanga of the Starfleet Marines proposes what would eventually become the "Normandy" design. The "Hornet" (NCC-9700) class fighter-carrier is instrumental in the liberation of the home worlds of the Tellar system (61 Cygni) during the Kzinti Incursion. This class of ship was built to quell the rising tide of outlaw activity in the Orion star system and the Deneb/Rigel commerce zones. Built to be manned by a 50% Rigellian crew, these ships have a higher deck height and increased oxygen atmospheres. The "Hornet" is also unique for possessing no secondary hull but instead a sensor/ deflector platform attached to a fractional primary hull disc--the pred- ecessor of the late 2280s' "Akula" class perimeter action ship. "Hornet" class fighter-carriers deploy 10 "Hornet" class (warp 3 capacity) fast attack craft to track Orion smuggler ships into asteroid field bases (the predecessor of "Killer Bee" assault craft) and with their own warp 8 cap- acity speeds and complements of 172, they are formidable starships. Ten vessels comprise this class (NCC-9700-NCC-9709) and each is armed with 10 phaser emplacements and 2 photon torpedo tubes. The Duotronic III series computer system is developed. stardates 7591.4-7598.5 September The "Tikopai" class exploratory cruisers are reclassified as heavy cruisers. stardate 8405.15 Captain E. Sandes Ishan retires from active duty, and becomes the head of the Strike Warfare Branch of the Chief of Starfleet Operations' Systems Analysis Division. 15 October 19 October 23 October November 14 November 19 November Warp communications accelerates subspace radio. December The Klingons relinquish their claim to Arcanis IV. This is the era of the rise of the Crescent Order in the Cardassian Empire. The strongest order ever created in the Cardassian hierarchy, the Crescent Order is almost unanimous in endorsement and is led by the High Gul--one of the founders of the Cardassian Empire. Also during this period the Gauntlet, a region of space within Sector 221-G where opposing forces of the Thallonian Empire would clash, comes to be known. 21 December 2273, 09 January 12 January The "Maxwell" (NCC-6900) class strike cruiser is authorized. Designed to deliver special forces and fighter craft to heavily defended targets, the "Maxwell's" speed (warp 9.2 maximum) and low profile will allow it to infiltrate contested zones, deliver its assault detachment, and then move into a support position. A class total of 42 is proposed and at least 36 will be built (NCC-6900-NCC-6935). Each vessel carries a complement of 539 and is armed with 3 torpedo banks (1 triple forward-firing bay), 12 standard phaser emplacements, and 2 dual megaphasers (4 cannons total: 2 fore, 2 aft). Starfleet decides to assign the past names of vessels only to vessels not classified as heavy cruisers, thus instigating the name changes of the replacement heavy cruisers originally designated "Constellation II," "Defiant II," "Intrepid II," and "Valiant II". February The "Kodiak" (NCC-6000) class battleship is authorized for construction. A warship designed as a capital assault ship and command flagship, the "Kodiak" class has warp 9 maximum speed, a complement of 700, and a full array of firepower consisting of 20 phasers, 6 megaphaser cannons, and 10 torpedo banks. 18 ships (NCC-6000-NCC-6017) out of a proposed 20 will enter service. These warships are propelled by SY 71/1-5 series advanced warp nacelles which will later see service on the "Hollingsworth" class penetration cruiser, "Lobo" class through deck carrier, and eventually the "Galileo" class 24th Century starcruisers. The 2-year picket duty mission of the "Challenger" in the Belle Terre system is scheduled to conclude. In the "Mirror" universe, the Imperial Senate meets for the first time and elects Spock as Commander-in-Chief for a 5-year term of service. Unfortunately world after world will join the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance out of hatred for the Terran Empire. Its only purpose will be to erase Earth and Vulcan from the universe, and spawn the most brutal war in the history of the known galaxy. 02 March 04 March Final dockyard selection for "Tikopai" class heavy cruisers is completed. Preliminary Evaluation tests are conducted on 1/3-scale "Akyazi" prototypes constructed by Avondale and Temerand. The designs are radically different and neither meets the performance parameters for flight compatibility set down by the Starfleet Requirements Board. The A Piece of the Action (TOS)PE program is terminated. The first 5-year mission of the upgraded USS Enterprise ends. A second 5-year mission, also with Captain James Kirk in command, will soon begin this year. Roughly at this time, pirate activity dies down in the Chal sector of space. 01 April The "Enterprise" class heavy cruisers have their six primary hull RIM-9 phaser banks upgraded to RIM-12C systems. April Clark Terrell is promoted to Commander. He is awarded the Four Palm Leaf and Palm Cluster for his first contact efforts. 15 April The USS "Nemesis" (NCC-1656) "Neihardt" class heavy cruiser participates in the tactical exercise Black Dog, in which one starship simulates a Romulan attack against a Federation force of 6 vessels. Out of the Starfleet ships, only the "Nemesis" survives with minor simulated damage, while neutralizing the threat vessel with a combination of skill, superior firepower, and luck. 01 May The "Soyuz" (NCC-5300) class attack frigate is authorized for con- struction. 20 ships of this class are proposed, designed to increase the accuracy of the megaphasers while the craft is engaged in combat through the use of 2 megaturrets. In addition to phaser cannon, the "Soyuz" is armed with 12 standard phaser emplacements and 2 megaphasers on the lower navigational dome. 21 ships of this class are proposed (NCC-5300- NCC-5320) although the number of ships and their NCCs are debatable at this early stage of development. Each ship will have a complement of 429 and a maximum speed of warp 9. By 2278, the class will total 5 vessels including the USS "Bozeman" (NCC-1841) commanded by Captain Morgan Bateson serving as a border cutter with a reduced complement. 11 May 25 May 27 May 11 June As a result of increasing Romulan incursions into UFP territory, Star Fleet's Chief of Staff in ship procurement vocalizes the idea that a fast light attack cruiser is needed to "discourage" the Romulans by intim- idating their border outposts. This will lead to the development of the "Niven" class light attack cruiser. 13 July 21 July 23 July 01 August This month's issue of 'Starship Design' briefly mentions the "Normandy" in 'A New Ship for the Marines'. 06 August 30 August The "Marco Polo" class I freighter is launched. Peter Preston is born. September 12 September The "Abbe" (NCC-5300) class photon torpedo destroyer is commissioned. This ship is designed to deliver a large barrage of photon torpedoes (or launch a large number of probes and sensors) via a unique photon hull housing 8 tubes. The "Abbe" has warp 9 capacity, 12 phaser emplacements, and a complement of 401. While patrolling near the Orion border, the USS "Abbe" will encounter 4 pirate vessels enroute to an unknown base within Orion space. After challenging Orion pirates, the "Abbe" is jumped by an Orion-bought D-7. Realizing it is outgunned, the D-7 attempts to disengage from battle. The "Abbe" follows and destroys one "Lightning" and manages to damage two others. Nearly 100 pirates and two ships are captured, with the "Abbe" suffering only minor damage and returning to patrol in less than two days. In the Delta Quadrant, ships from the planet Dernovin make contact with Draanis IV and quickly annex the planet, using the people as slaves for developing computer technology. 24 October 26 October Ambassador Sarek begins preparations for the Legaran conference. 13 November 15 November 28 November The assassin Cor Lakandir is born on Ssan (Alpha Gederix IV). 02 December 03 December December Starfleet begins to clarify specifications for a new support style vessel with the ability to act out the role of a small frigate or cruiser should such a need arise, and be able to act as a supply and maintenance vessel during the majority of its operational life. It will evolve into the "Dargan" (NCC-1915) class starship. During this era, the practice of funeral pyre cremation goes out of practice on Pulva. 29 December 2274, January The Mark I USS "Pharris" class frigate is commissioned. The forefront of Andorian design, capable of fast launching assault shuttles and still maintaining combat capability, the "Pharris" is sent to the Klingon border where it directly engages both D-7's and D-32's, proving successful in most encounters. The name "Dargan" is chosen for the prototype vessel of a frigate/cruiser type starship. 20 January (stardates 7815.3-7816.1) The Space Control Ship Project is considered by senior officers of Star Fleet Command. The idea for the "Niven" class light attack cruiser is formally proposed. Heading for Starbase 17 for R&R, Captain Kirk is abducted by Klingons. They nearly succeed in convincing Kirk that he was transported into the future to lead a fleet of Klingon warships into UFP space. Even the most primitive shuttle from this time period onwards will come equipped with its own artificial gravity field. The warp engines of the "Enterprise" heavy cruisers are uprated with minor modifications. Uprating on all "Enterprise" starships will be completed by 2276. The engines will again be uprated once again, beginning in 2281. In addition to main propulsion, "Enterprise" class starships have their six RH single mount secondary hull phaser banks replaced with RSM-14B single mount banks. February 07 February 15 February 18 February 20 February A serious disagreement occurs between the UFP and the Patonites. 20 March 21 March 27 March 26 April 07 May 11 May 16 May June The "Daedalus" class ship USS "Carolina" is found welded to an asteroid in the Xii system where it had become a habitat module for colonists. It will be retrieved and added to the Starfleet Museum. 14 June James Armstrong applies for admission to the Starfleet Academy. In the "Mirror" universe, Spock is killed during the Battle of Mutara. Spock's shrine is erected on Vulcan: a sphere balanced on a tiny fulcrum. Overseer Kira will visit it in 2369. But according to another account, Intendent Spock will survive through the 24th Century. In the alternate "Mirror" universe, Admiral Spock is court-martialed and executed on the charge of treason. Shortly thereafter, Ambassador Sarek is assassinated by another Vulcan eager for his job. At this time, the Empire spans 6 to 8 percent of the galaxy. 21 June 27 June 28 June 09 July July 15 July The USS "Artemis," bound for Septimus Minor, colonizes Tau Cygna V after a guidance system malfunction. The USS "Essex" (NCC-1727) undergoes a standard overhaul during which her PB-32 engines are again uprated with internal modifications, once again improving acceleration times and increasing endurance at specific warp speeds. 31 July The population of Fenner achieves spaceflight. 10 August 14 August 01 September 05 September 10 September 11 September 13 September 19 September Wing Commander Taryn takes Savel into his household at the age of 5, raising her as an adopted daughter. Audrid Dax steps down as head of the Trill Symbiosis Commission on her 56th birthday. She writes a letter to her daughter, Leema Cyl, revealing what happened to her father 15 years ago. September 30 September 01 October 11 October 15 October 09 November November The Romulans' Grand Design is put into action. The "Enterprise" recovers a Romulan warship loaded with deadly cargo. Starfleet H.Q. on Earth is contaminated and the "Enterprise" voyages back to the planet Hellguard for the cure. 21 November 01 December 08 December December The USS Lynx NCC-4600 experimental timeship is constructed. The "Lynx" is a modified "Monoceros" (NCC-601) class scout, built for the single purpose of exploring the viability of retrograde time travel for research purposes. Her complement is 254, warp capacity of only warp 6.1 not built with warp dynamics a priority, and ordnance consisting of 8 phaser emplacements and two torpedo tubes (with only 12 torpedoes total). Roughly during this time period, Bevvox founds a Think Tank group in the Delta Quadrant after wandering the galaxy on his own for a few millennia. 2275, 02 January Elias Vaughn is born. The USS "Pharris" is recalled back to Andor for a torpedo systems upgrade. While in drydock, the shields are also upgraded to the more powerful FShore Leave (TOS) system, making it the Mark II configuration. The FShore Leave (TOS) allows more power to be transferred to the weapons systems. This class will become a popular design and soon the Starfleet Marine Special Ops will take an interest in the ship. With its single engine signature, the "Pharris" will prove useful for high speed response and special operations that require a powerful combat vessel. Around this time in the Delta Quadrant, the Rhawnian people learn that their world will be destroyed in a collision of suns. They begin to find a means off of their planet, ultimately constructing the immense sublight ship "Traveler". 15 January Decommissioning of the old "Belleau Wood" (NCC-1547) class assault transports begins. January February The "Sydney" (NCC-S2000) class transport ship is authorized for construc- tion. A light-duty interstellar capable personnel/cargo transport vessel, the "Sydney" class will be able to carry up to 200 passengers (not counting the standard ship's complement of 82). This class will total 79 vessels (NCC-S2000-NCC-S2099) each with warp 8.2 capacity and 8 phaser emplacements. 03 February The USS "Avenger" (NCC-1860) begins an extended shakedown cruise to weed out any design flaws in the new technology refit, including fully testing the Wright-Corder warp engine nacelle pylon layout. High marks will be received for nearly all of the "Avenger's" new systems. The one exception will be the adequate rating for the ship's matter/antimatter intermix shaft configuration. Although slower rates of dilithium decay will be reported for the Wright-Corder configurations, maintenance aboard these ships will prove to be far more cumbersome than expected. The ASDB will ultimately decide that the current technology cannot support the sound theory to make the Wright-Corder design an operational success and the theories will be temporarily shelved. 10 February 16 February 17 February 19 February 23 February The USS "Daran" (NCC-3201) fast frigate is commissioned. Essentially scaled- down "Avenger" heavy frigates, 26 in all will be built (NCC-1940- NCC-1965). Armed with only phasers (no torpedoes), a complement of 350, and a warp capacity of 11, these ships will replace the converted "Surya" frigates. Having increased speed and even greater maneuverability than the "Avenger" heavy frigates, they will be used for similar missions but closer to the UFP's interior. The USS "Knox" will later, on stardate 7904.36, intercept a coded distress signal while on patrol along the disputed region of Federation- Klingon borderspace. The message, originating from a vessel in Klingon space and directed at the Klingon construction facility in the Kohl star system, indicates that a prototype warship had developed an imbalance in its warpfield generating capabilities while on trials. The resulting wormhole had left it unable to move or navigate. The "Knox" immediately dispatches two surveillance drones to examine the stricken vessel. During this time, Sulu is introduced to his daughter, Demora Ling, after Ling Sui dies from Sakuro's Disease. He turns down the position of First Officer of the "Bozeman" (NCC-1841) under Captain Bateson in order to take care of Demora, and takes a teaching position at Starfleet Academy in San Franciso on Earth. Admiral James Kirk also becomes an instructor at the Academy. Starfleet has word that a Klingon fleet is mustering in the Fries- Posnikoff Sector and Admiral Kirk temporarily takes the "Enterprise" out of the Academy training program. The "Enterprise" rendezvous with the USS "Bozeman" (NCC-1841) "Soyuz" class starship (operating as a border cutter) commanded by Captain Morgan "Bulldog" Bateson. Kozara, commanding the Klingon ship "SoSoy tuj," plots to obliterate Starbase 12 and gives chase to the lone ship "Bozeman" through the Typhon Expanse. The "Bozeman" becomes entrapped in a temporal distortion but not before launching a comm buoy recovered by the "Enterprise" which chases Kozara out of UFP space. The Klingon plot is exposed and condemned as cowardly espionage rather than noble challenge, which embarrasses the entire Klingon Empire and shakes the High Council to its bones. There will be several turnovers of power and several families will fall out of influence including Kazara's. In UFP space on Rhodes Colony's Starbase 12, the main spaceway is named Bateson Boulevard after months of investigation fail to locate the "Bozeman." The ship will emerge in 2368 and be recovered by the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D). With the disappearance of the "Bozeman," the M'Yengh Yards quickly add on what will be the most unique feature of the "Renown" class: extended torpedo launchers in the bow. It will give the "Renown" class a distinct advantage over similar designs in each of its configurations. stardate 8003.25 The "Enterprise" is drydocked for damage evaluation and refitting, fol- lowing her last deep-space mission, and undergoes a refit which will last anywhere from six months to a year. Presumably this is when the "Enterprise" does not meet the performance requirements of Starfleet Directive MXX-487113: 'Operational Parameters And Damage Survival Recom- mendations For Federation Vessels On Active Duty Status.' (Note that at this time an estimated 400 UFP spacecraft do not meet Directive MXX- 487113.) During this refit, the "Enterprise's" bridge is upgraded exten- sively. The Science Station is moved from between the turbolift stations and fitted with 16 organic memory packs to store data from the library computer. Turbolift Stations are fitted with Halon 1301 fire exting- uishers and wall-mounted personnel monitors (to replace the earlier per- scan individual belt monitors worn on the old uniforms), in addition to receiving turbolift logo stickers. The Internal Security Station is moved over three stations and equipped with a written personnel log and the addition of 8 manual override module ports. The Artificial Gravity Control Station has a gravity flux monitor and warning alarms added. The Environmental Control Station is relocated next to the Weapons Station. The Damage & Repair Station is refitted with a smaller console, plug-in ports, and the addition of diagnosis modules and 8 manual override modules. The Communications Station is fitted with frequency calibration panels. The Engineering Station has a computer monitor redesign and is moved over three positions. The Weapons Station is equipped with a manual photon torpedo fire trigger, a redesigned shield status display, and features the addition of a kick-out panel providing access to the circuit access corridor. The Systems Status panel to the left of the main viewer is fitted with 6 backup power packs and the system status grid is re- designed with 8 color-coded warning strobes. The Command Con and other chairs might also be refitted or replaced at this time. May The USS "Konkordium" (NCC-2106) "Federation" class dreadnought is dry- docked for upgrade to "Federation (II)" specs. The "Griffin" (NCC-F4100) class supply tender is authorized for construc- tion. Used primarily for the shipment of starship maintenance related cargo and parts, the "Griffin" class will be used in the private and com- mercial sectors. The 82 ships comprising this class (NCC-F4100-NCC-F4181) will carry 112 as a standard ship's complement, possess warp 7 capacity (SC35/1-45F self-contained nacelles), and 6 phaser emplacements. Also authorized for construction is the "Todega" class (NCC-S300) tug. This class of 4-nacelle class 2 vessels will total 82 (NCC-S300-NCC-S381), each with warp 8 capacity, a standard complement of 111, and 4 phasers. Starfleet issues a design brief for a fighter-type to replace the aging "Lancer" class heavy fighter. Improvements in Klingon and Romulan cloaking technology have rendered the "Lancer" obsolete as part of Starfleet's scouting element. The USS "Nelson" (NCC-1953) strike carrier is completed and rushed to the Klingon front. The "Nelson" (CVB) is a new construction designed with larger shuttlebays, which will accommodate F-15s next year. The UFP tries to capture the pirate vessel "Berol Turquoise," but the pirate cruiser "Hammerfield" intervenes. The Orion heavy cruiser begins pirate operations and the WYN Orion battle raider begins service. The Klingons join the Lyrans and declare war on the Kzinti. The Klingon assault quickly smashed the border bases and drove the Kzinti back to their capitol. Korath, the "Direslayer," and the Tholian Border Squadron are deployed to the Kzinti front--where Korath will eventually become an Admiral. The Hydrans will attack both the Klingons and the Lyrans. William Gerard serves as an "observer" with the Kzinti fleet. The Tholian "Black Widow" carrier enters full production as the Tholians gear up to defend the Holdfast against further Klingon aggression. The "Cutlass Episode" occurs. The Kumerian's Klingon D6 "Destruction" raids Sherman's planet, escalating tensions between the Klingon Empire and the UFP, on a mission to destroy a battalion of fighters and ground troops (originally posted there for local defense against "pirates and renegades"). Kumerian, leading the ground assault himself, destroys the battalion (although many troops simply discard their weapons and flee) and 5 of the 6 F-4 "Phantom" fighters, humiliating the Federation. The improved heavy cruiser USS "Hornet" (NCC-1714) was distracted by a Klingon frigate and out of position to assist. Kumerian earns a reputation as a tough commander. The Federation experiments with fighters on the carrier USS "Discovery." A warp-powered version of the Romulan "Warhawk" enters service. ISC forces defeat a Romulan squadron on an exploratory mission crossing the unmarked border of Trusteeship Territory and make initial contact with the Gorn. The Gorn G-8 "Lizard" local defense fighter (a modified Federation F-8 "Crusader" carrying two Plasma D torpedo racks in place of drone racks), and battle destroyer enter service. The Romulan "Snipe" B battle frigate enters service. The Jindarian escort carrier, escort frigate, destroyer escort, medium carrier, strike carrier, heavy battle carrier, and heavy carrier enter service. The Kzinti space control ship enters service. The Klingons begin construction of the B-10 battleship "Invincible." The WYN Orion double raider enters service, as does the Orion improved light raider. Shortly after the ISC incursion into Romulan territory, the Romulans send a long-range automated probe into ISC territory to gain information. Later in the year, the Klingons attack a Federation tug in the Neutral Zone, and send a huge asteroid toward a Federation colony the next year. Although UFP clashes with the Gorn and Kzinti have ceased (due to increased pirate operations, particulary in the sparsely populated survey area), there are several Federation clashes with the Romulans and Tholians. A minor skirmish between Gorn and Romulans is the first combat action of two captains who will become prominent during the General War: Romulan Commander Tiercellus and Gorn Captain S'Treleg. The USS "Menahga" (NCC-3100) heavy destroyer is constructed. Found to be flawed, the go ahead for the class' production will be given with the provision that solutions to the inherent faults could be incorporated into future craft and retrofitted into existing vessels. The development of a subtly improved battlecruiser design will lead to the 7 unbuilt "Menahga" class ships forming the "Mitannic" class. Both classes will be deployed at the most distant and vulnerable starbases and outposts as short duration spacecraft. The USS "Hastings" (NCC-3104) will be specially refitted and be awarded its own class in another decade, the sole ship of its type. The "S'Harien" (NCC-3107) class battlecruiser will represent the eventual improved "Menahga" configuration. 26 January The USS "Tikarmpo" (NCC-4834) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. 07 February The USS "Swift" (NCC-1958) "Knox" class frigate is laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia, Earth. Winona Kirk's home in Riverside, Iowa is destroyed when lightning strikes the 350-year-old farmhouse, burning it to the ground. Her grandson, Peter, home on vacation from Starfleet Academy, carries her unconscious from the smoke to safety. She will never recover from the setback, mentally or physically. Starfleet RDT&E develops a fix for the Type 1/2B Phaser that will greatly reduce the incidence of failure. Starfleet directs Atalskes to begin remanufacturing the Type 1/2B to incorporate this fix. Starfleet also issues a new request for proposals for a phaser to supplement the Type 1/2B while this remanufacture is underway. Several research missions underway in previously unexplored regions of the galaxy discover intelligent civilizations on non-class M worlds. Requiring these ships to rely more extensively on shuttlecraft to venture into worlds of great depths or hostile environmental conditions, Star Fleet becomes aware of the need to introduce new, long range multipurpose vessels capable of carrying and maintaining a larger complement of craft than a cruiser or frigate, though less than a supercarrier. A common ground is created between the military staff and council as a new vessel with a mission profile similar to and complementing the heavy cruiser is formulated. The new class would be assigned missions primarily involving non-class M planets, which would free up heavy cruisers for their similar and more traditional missions to Class M planets. This quickly evolves into the heavy carrier concept. Meanwhile, the "Santee" (NCC-1925) class escort carriers are again refit- ted, notably with the Spacecraft Control System (The Savage Curtain (TOS)S) sensor and communi- cations suite, allowing ships to monitor the flight paths of all embarked craft and establish computer links with them. It is the forerunner of the Flight Tasking And Control (FA Taste of Armageddon (TOS)C) integrated suite used on newer carriers. 14 July The USS "Rishiri" (NCC-2507) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is launched. The company's Martian facility begins conducting independent research and development in an effort to produce several A Piece of the Action (TOS) designs that would be acceptable to Star Fleet should the perimeter action program be reactivated. 01 May The USS "F. Josephs" (NCC-4844) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. [Y 170] Months after launch, the Romulan ISC probe returns, damaged by unknown forces. Due to its damaged navigation computer, it runs out of fuel in a nebula (of the Argonians) on the fringes of ISC space between the Romulan Empire and the Gorn Confederation. The Romulans send their nearest ship to recover the probe, but Gorn Intelligence (also interested in infor- mation on this new and unknown power, and perhaps forewarned by Argonians) intercepts the messages and sends their nearest ship to recover the probe first. The Romulan ship, the "Skyhawk" destroyer "Battleaxe," uses its superior turning ability and weapons arcs, and succeeds in forcing the Gorn battle destroyer "Kalessin" to disengage. Recovering the probe, the Romulans flee Argonian territory before the Argonian reserves can react. This success results in the promotion of Tribune Tiercellus to command of the "SparrowHawk" class "Avenger." Lieutenant Commander S'Treleg is not crit- icized as he had fought a more maneuverable vessel to a near standstill, and he had reason to believe (incorrectly as it turned out) that the probe would never be recovered. He eventually will rise to the rank of Admiral. While patrolling a quiet area of the Kzinti-Federation frontier, the light carrier KHS "Typhoon" stumbles upon an Andromedan "Intruder" surveying an asteroid field. Knowing that a single cruiser is no match for his ship, and desiring to learn more about this unknown race, the Kzinti captain of the "Typhoon" orders the squadron to investigate. With the light carrier "Typhoon" is the escort frigate EF214, the destroyer "Gargoyle," the light cruiser "Phantasm," and the 73rd AAS fighter squadron Storm Winds. The "Intruder" carries one "Courier" and three "Vipers" in its hangar bay. When the battle ends, the Kzinti lose all of their fighters and has sus- tained heavy damage to all ships, the EF214 having been destroyed. By massing their fire and having a little good luck with drones slipping through the asteroids, the Kzinti succeed in destroying two "Vipers." The Kzinti commander disengaged rather than risked the total destruction of his force. The Kzinti Science Council finds the scientific data the ships had managed to collect of considerable interest. The Kzinti escort carrier "Stardust" uses a captured Klingon shuttle from last year in an attempt to ambush the Klingon carrier tug "Berserker." The plan calls for ambushing and destroying a small Klingon convoy. The shuttle, prepared with a suicide bomb, is left with a distress beacon. The Klingons, arriving at the scene of the ambush accompanied by E3E escorts "Sukhoi" and "Taifun," can't detect any lifeforms or targeting data from the shuttle (it was simply left in space). They sight a Kzinti force moving in, the "Stardust" and escort frigate, which allows no time to board the shuttle. The Klingon captain decides to salvage the shuttle for a scatter pack by tractor beam. The Klingon shuttle explodes in the secondary bay of the CVT, causing a chain reaction among the Klingon Z-2 fighters. The Kzinti AAS fighters clean up the mess. The Klingon D6B "Destruction" mutinies and is interned at the Federation Starbase 16. It will be returned to the Klingons next year after a detailed Federation study. The Klingons are outraged that the Federation dismantled the Ubitron Interface Module. The Klingons want to declare war on the UFP but are restrained by the Organians. Kumerian, captain of the "Destruction," is demoted in disgrace and sent to command the penal frigate "Insufferable." His son Kollos graduates from the Deep Space Academy, but is refused a naval com- mission. He transfers to the Security (Police) forces. The Kzinti Hanger pod enters service. The Romulan "Condor" dreadnought enters service. An Orion light carrier is first spotted in operation. The Lyran "Lion" dreadnought enters service. The Hydran "Paladin", "Dragoon", "Knight", and "Cuirassier" enter service. And the Frax war carrier, war cruiser escort, missile destroyer, and submarine missile cruiser enter service. The Klingons attack the Federation tug "Swift-Tuttle." Klingon police and military forces battle over a captured shipload of contraband. After the successful mutiny of the D6B "Destruction," the Klingon Marine Corps takes greater precautions in preventing mutinies and in dealing with them after the fact. Their most grueling training scenario becomes the hypothetical mutiny of the B10 battleship "Invincible." Having successfully mutinied, and on its way to the border, the remaining officers and crew are over- coming the security interlocks and reactivating the ship. While this is deemed an unlikely scenario, it is retained by the War College for several years as a reminder of the "worst case" and to impress into the minds of the non-Klingon Marines the futility of attempted mutiny. It will be up- dated several times as operational data on the B10 becomes available and as refits are installed. The usual outcome of this scenario is the recapture of the B10, although sometimes the losses incurred by the Klingon forces are excessive. The Klingons advance into Hydran territory with a tenuous supply line. The Hydrans convert the captured D7 "Anarchist" to the D7H. The Lyrans raid Hydran logistics bases. There were many Hydrans still living who remembered the pain of their earlier occupation and their determination not to allow the home world to undergo occupation again resulted in rigid "die in place" and "no retreat" oper- ations that made defeat inevitable. Holding their capital against the combined Klingon-Lyran assault was impossible, and trying to do so simply allowed the bulk of the Hydran fleet to be trapped and destroyed. The Hydrans lose about 20% of their fleet in the ill-fated Expedition, and another 60% in the vain defense of Hydra, leaving only a fraction of their former firepower to escape to the Old Colonies and build again. The Coalition, with no information on the Old Colonies elects not to launch a long and possibly endless pursuit into the unknown region. The Lyrans (with some Klingon support) attempted to build and maintain a chain of bases to guard against the eventual return of the Hydrans from the Old Colonies. Once the Hydrans established production facilities in the Old Colonies, they will launch a series of raids and strikes that will make the five-year "battle of the line" into one of the longest and most des- perate of the entire war. This line of bases will hold until their collapse in 2288 forcing the Lyrans' retreat to the original border in a bid to establish peace. Argonian command and heavy cruisers have all received the Strobe refit. The Second Argonian First Republic/Plasma Occupied Territory War begins: the Argonian First Republic suffers great losses to its territory over the next 12 years as increased piracy by the Corporation divides AFR forces between the war and anti-piracy duties. The front is pushed back nearly to the Homecloud Nebula. Most Far Side races begin limited fighter deployment through 2285. During this year, the Argonian "Blizzard" class destroyer escort, the Krebiz "Krill-S" slow fighter, Klingon D5G commando war cruiser, D5E war cruiser escort, and the E3 escort are in service. The Federation commando carrier, Balance of Terror (TOS)V battle tug carrier, Self-Defense pod, A-7 ground support fighter, new light cruiser, strike carrier+, frigate leader, and minehunter frigate enter service. In addition, the Federation police flagship refit (FWhat Are Little Girls Made Of? (TOS)+) is launched. The USS "Gorshkov" (NCC-1954) strike carrier is completed and sent to the Romulan front with F-4 fighters. The "Gorshkov" will return to Earth within a few months to be outfitted with F-4 fighters. The UFP planned to use the "Gorshkov" and the "Nelson" as "battlecarriers" to lead the fleet carrier force until the heavy carriers (only in the building stages) were ready. The Jindarian's war destroyer is also in service. The Lyran "Sabre Tooth Tiger" "Mauler" cruiser enters service. The LDR war destroyer leader, and improved command cruiser are in service. The WYN auxiliary carrier is in service. The Andromedan Medium Cargo pod is in service. The Tholians' MNP monitor, TK5 destroyer, patrol escort, patrol corvette+, The Devil in the Dark (TOS)P photon armed destroyer, photon armed heavy cruiser, photon armed command cruiser, and photon armed "Tarantula" class dreadnought enter service. The Orion light carrier enters pirate service. The Kzinti strike carrier, light carrier+, escort carrier+, medium cruiser, medium escort cruiser, medium drone cruiser all enter service. The Romulan "SuperHawk" command cruiser (carrier), K7RB Klingon D7 Romulan battlecruiser design with a refit, KRB Klingon D6 battlecruiser Romulan refit, KRL Klingon D6 battlecruiser leader design are all in Romulan service. The ISC AF attrition fighter, and frigate leader enter service. The Hydran "Sting-2" fighter, "Sting-F" superiority fighter, "Sting-H" hellbore armed fighter, D7H "Anarchist" (captured Klingon battlecruiser), and "Ranger+" heavy cruiser, "Dragoon+" heavy cruiser, and "Cavalier" heavy carrier enter service. The "Sting-2" carries two forward fusion beams and a forward gatling point defense phaser, the "Sting-F" anti-fighter carries a forward gatling point defense phaser, and the "Sting-H" carries a forward gatling point defense phaser in addition to its forward-firing hellbore. The Gorn light scout cruiser, heavy destroyer, destroyer+, light cruiser+, heavy cruiser+, and command cruiser+ all enter service. The Gorn also introduce the "Brachiosaur" class heavy carrier and remove the "Apatosaur" class heavy carrier from service. The "Brachiosaur" class carries a ship's complement of approximately 640, has warp 8.1 capacity, and at 558 meters is the largest vessel ever produced by the Gorn. Armament consists of 8 heavy disruptors and 4 squadrons of "Gavial" heavy fighters (15). 18 May The "Shen-ti-yang" (NCC-8768) "Saberhagen" class defense-substation is commissioned. While a cadet at Starfleet Academy, Dmitri Valtane earns a citation for conspicuous bravery during a midshipman training cruise aboard the USS "Madrid." Armed only with a large stick, he rescues two wounded officers from a pack of Denebian slime devils. 29 June The USS "Carron" (NCC-1965) "Knox" class frigate is laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia, Earth. If Cyrano Jones did not have the help of the Klingon glommer in 2262, he would have finished cleaning up all the tribbles on Space Station K-7 at this time. Spock's calculations are only 3.6 minutes off and the "Enterprise" is present. Nilz Baris becomes Governor of Sherman's Planet, Cyrano Jones transports all the tribbles back to the Klingon homeworld (Iota Geminorum IV) and becomes Security Chief of K-7. The USS "Berry" (NCC-1918) "Dargan" class frigate/cruiser suffers a warp core breach shortly after rendering aid to the trader "Kristoff," a merchant vessel that had sent out a distress call. The exact cause of the breach will never be identified and foul play will not be ruled out. 08 July The USS "Braithwaite" (NCC-4845) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. 09 July The USS "Ability" (NCC-1953) "Knox" class frigate is commissioned. The Mark III "Anubis" class scout is commissioned. 23 July The "Odessa" (NCC-8767) "Saberhagen" class defense-substation is commissioned. Starting this year, Admiral Kirk participates in this semester's Command School opening at Starfleet Academy. He will not miss an opening for over the next 8 years. 03 August The USS "Swift" (NCC-1958) "Knox" class frigate is commissioned. 07 August (stardate 8354.2) The Association of Military Surgeons of Starfleet holds its biennial convention at the Peleiades Planet Complex, Canton City, Luna, Sol III. The program includes continuing offering in education for physicians, nurses, etc., research presentations, seminars on non-humanoid medical techniques, alien on-planet procedures, a Combat Medical Readiness Course, and numerous seminars on medically-related scientific break- throughs. 15 August (stardate 8358.5) The Association of Medical Surgeons of Starfleet convention ends. 19 August The USS "Haven" (NCC-2514) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is laid down at Cosmadyne Corporation, Boston Shipyards, Earth. 23 August The USS "Fahrion" (NCC-2510) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is com- missioned. The "Fahrion" is probably the first of the "Belknap" cruisers built to the Mark II configuration. 26 August The USS "Callahan" (NCC-4846) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. 12 September The USS "Miramichi" (NCC-1963) "Knox" class frigate is launched. 14 September The USS "Demelo" (NCC-4847) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is com- missioned. 17 September (stardate 8375.5) The USS "Dun Tak" frigate reunion is held at San Francisco, California, Earth. 20 September (stardate 8378.4) The "Dun Tak" reunion concludes. Skel is born, the son of T'Reth. The remaining 4 refitted "Aerie" class heavy carriers ("Aerie," "Den," "Lair," and "Nest") are converted to fleet support vessels--the same configuration as the previous 7 ships--as the perceived need for a heavy carrier has diminished. The Mark II "Abbe" class photon torpedo destroyer is commissioned, with double the impulse power and improved phaser offensive capabilities. 17 October The USS "Stark" (NCC-3208) fast frigate is repaired in Earth orbit after being severely damaged on stardate 7955.5 when defense craft of the Gorn Hegemony fired upon what they reportedly believed was an unidentified ship which did not respond to messages. 33 of the ship's crew were lost and the UFP files a formal protest. 22 October The USS "Matapan" (NCC-1960) "Knox" class frigate is laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding, Louisiana, Earth. Following the "Ser'rath" and "Stark" actions, Starfleet concludes that a rapid-response salvage capability for forces operating in dangerous areas or performing military missions is required. The Salvage Ship Design Team (SSDT) is formed. The SSDT initially concludes that a "Maxwell" class strike cruiser would be the most suitable candidate for conversion but are in high-demand in the fleet. Instead, Starfleet puts the USS "Kaya" (NCC-1952) "Knox" class frigate at the group's disposal. The ship is decommissioned and renamed the USS "Lisetovar" after the former Chief Salvage Officer of the Fleet, and reclassified NCC-23500. Problems persist with the ship's structure and tractor beams, resulting in the design of a specialized large mass towing array framework. 06 November The USS "Boyington" (NCC-4848) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. She will be destroyed within the next decade. 12 November The USS "Estocin" (NCC-2511) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is com- missioned. "Endeavor" class ships are equipped with Duotronic III systems. The surviving ships of the "Hopi" (NCC-1430) class large survey vessels are partially refitted and modernized during this period and will remain in service for at least another decade. System upgrades and enhancements to existing components are the majority of these improvements. The Type 1/2C Hand/Pistol Phaser is developed by Starfleet at the Sestra Weapons Facility on Alpha Centauri VII. The Type 1 unit has a maximum effective stun range of 50 meters, heat of 5 meters, disrupt of 30 meters, dematerialize of 15 meters, and an overload blast radius of 60 meters. The Type 2 unit, incorporating the Type 1C, has a maximum effective stun range of 150 meters, heat of 10 meters, disrupt of 100 meters, dematerialize of 50 meters, and an overload blast radius of 200 meters. A very similar variant on this, the Phaser 1 Mark II long range beam weapon and the Phaser 2 Mark II extended range beam weapon (also known as the Phaser B series, or respectively Phaser IB and Phaser IIB), yield even greater effective ranges. Respectively: 107/215 meters for stun, 70/150 meters for disrupt, 30/90 meters for dematerialize, and overload blast radii of 150/275 meters. Quite reminiscent of the original Type I/II phasers, these units use a single, enclosed emitter crystal (LiCu 514) and a simplified, ruggedized touch pad with a mechanical backup switch. The smooth, sweeping appearance will make the weapon popular (both Types 1 & 2). The only complaint will be the smooth hand grip not offering an adequately secure grip. 15 December The USS "Diligence" (NCC-1956) "Knox" class frigate is launched. 2281, 01 January The USS "Matsurra" (NCC-2512) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is launched. The second minor uprating of warp drive engines on "Enterprise" class heavy cruisers begins. It will be complete on all ships of this class in one year. The "Daran" class fast frigate "Stark" (NCC-3208) is relaunched. Starfleet first considers the modification of a small number of "Avenger" class heavy frigates to the yet-to-be-named "Endurance" configuration. Construction begins on the "Jenshahn" (NCC-2215) class heavy carrier. This class will total 28 vessels, each with warp 11 capacity, 16 phasers and 2 torpedo tubes, a complement of 465, and an embarked craft capacity of over 25 vessels. The early ships of this class will prove to be very successful and will be embraced by the scientific and cultural research communities. The military however will be less satisfied with the ships' inadequate combat capacity. These complaints will surface in a few years after a series of violent offenses are launched against the UFP, re- sulting in the "Chosin" (NCC-2610) class attack carrier, which will even- tually total 25 ships, the majority being deployed along the Romulan and Tholian borders. Krantin loses contact with its six interstellar vessels including the "Hope of Krantin". 01 February The USS "Utsira" (NCC-1964) "Knox" class frigate is launched. 02 February The USS "Adamcek" (NCC-4849) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is com- missioned. 04 February The USS "Miramichi" (NCC-1963) "Knox" class frigate is commissioned. 14 February The USS "Rommel" (NCC-4850) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is com- missioned. Captain Henry Friess and his crew will be awarded Starfleet's second highest commendation and named flagship of the Retaliatory Fleet for her exploits in the valiant defense against the Romulan Empire. 12 March The USS "Stark" (NCC-3208) "Daran" class fast frigate is recommissioned following major repair. 29 April The USS "Briza" (NCC-2515) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is laid down at Cosmadyne Corporation, Boston Shipyards, Earth. 08 May The USS "Diligence" (NCC-1956) "Knox" class frigate is commissioned. Dmitri Valtane graduates from Starfleet Academy in the 83rd percentile. His first posting is as a junior astrophysicst aboard the USS "Gallipoli." He will help chart Sectors 219 Alpha, 220 Alpha, and 220 Beta. 21 May The USS "Wakkadingo" (NCC-4851) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. 28 May The "Chang-chun" (NCC-8769) "Saberhagen" class defense-substation is commissioned. [Y 171] The Klingons and Lyrans are on the verge of victory. The Hydrans are defeated and effectively out of the war, and the Kzinti are barely hanging onto a capital reduced to rubble. The Kzinti are at the point of suing for peace on any terms they could get when the Federation, alarmed at the prospect of a Klingon Empire that could nearly equal its economic power, began taking a serious interest in the war. The Federation begins its own arms buildup and was on the verge of providing the Kzinti massive economic support and sending the 4th Fleet into Kzinti space. The Klingons, who had been watching the Federation "wake up" and build up its forces, become seriously alarmed at the prospect of a widened war. The Empire's strat- egic plan was originally to wait at least ten years (after conquering the Kzinti capital) before considering a war with the Federation. The Klingons attempt to defuse the situation diplomatically with a protest to the Organians. They argue that Federation interference was about to pro- long a war that should be ending, and note that the result of that war would be a situation far more stable than the previous three decades had been. The Organians remain silent on the question for reasons that will never been fully understood. The Klingons begin extensive probing of the Neutral Zone and find that the decrease in Organian interference is rapidly accelerating. While historians continue to argue whether the Organians were allowing a war consciously or were simply involved in some other matter and not paying attention the eventual result is the same. As sporadic conflict along the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone escalates, the Federation begins to mobilize. The Klingons recognize that a mobilized Federation is a very dangerous opponent and they are unable to conceive of a defensive mobilization (which some Federation historians continue to insist it is). The Klingons are faced with a difficult choice. The Federation seems determined to intervene in the Klingo-Kzinti War, and the Federation buildup is rapidly making any Klingon attack on the UFP a less certain propostion than it had been before. By this year, the Lyran Dukes are employing "Lion" class dreadnoughts, battlecruisers captained by Marshals, and some war cruisers captained by Barons--directly under Royal control rather than part of the feudal forces. Originally the Dukes only utilized "Bengal Tiger" command cruisers. The Argonian "Seastorm" class light battlecruiser enters service. The Krebiz battlecruiser capsule, "Mandible" light battlecruiser, and "Claw" class battlecruiser are in service. The Andromedan "Diamondback" commando destroyer, "Conquistador" light cruiser, "Python" satellite ship, satellite bases (in our own galaxy), "Kingsnake" cargo ship, and "Mamba" heavy destroyer are all serving in our galaxy. The Orion strike carrier enters pirate service. The Kzinti medium tactical transport (able to carry one pod) enters service. The UFP scout+, destroyer+, new drone cruiser, heavy carrier, escort cruiser, F-14 "Tomcat" fighter, A-10 "Warthog" fighter, and E-2 "Hawkeye" SWAC shuttle enter service. The Federation also takes the old light cruiser USS "Connecticut" (NCC-936) out of mothballs to fight in the General War. The F-14 fighter carries two or four special drone rails (on which two Type 1 and two Type 6 drones are mounted) in addition to a forward gatling point defense phaser. The A-10 carries two Type 1 drones, a forward point defense phaser, a rear-firing point defense phaser, and a forward photon torpedo tube. The E-2 carries an anti-drone rack with six warheads, a 360 degree gatling point defense phaser, and will be utilized as an electronic warfare command post rather than as a fighter. The ISC dreadnought and light carrier enter service. The Lyran escort frigate enters service. The Romulan "Firehawk-A" heavy cruiser enters service. The Hydrans' "Picket" heavy survey cruiser (PIC) and PICV variant, and scout destroyer (The Devil in the Dark (TOS)S, a "Lancer" variant) are launched. The Gorn police flagship refit (FWhat Are Little Girls Made Of? (TOS)+) is launched, likewise for the Federation medium carrier refit (And the Children Shall Lead (TOS)V+, built on an old light cruiser hull). The last "Griffith" (NCC-SV100) class salvage ship leaves Starfleet service. After decommissioning, most "Griffith" class ships were bought by private companies and used to salvage commercial vessels and small space stations. After attending one of Commander Sulu's lectures at Starfleet Academy on Earth, Demora Sulu runs into Saavik and Peter Preston. Then she briefly meets Admiral James Kirk after wandering into a Mark IV bridge simulator, and Boothby. At this time, Uhura has taken a brief leave of absence from Starfleet to take a job on a broadcast station on Mars' capital of Ares City. 16 June The USS "Robinson" (NCC-4852) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. 17 June The "Urbaque" (NCC-8770) "Saberhagen" class defense-substation is com- missioned. 27 June The USS "Utsira" (NCC-1964) "Knox" class frigate is commissioned. 28 June The USS "Carron" (NCC-1965) "Knox" class frigate is launched. 17 July The "Rising Star" class starliner "Ring of Saturn" (NCC-S1223) enroute to Shiralea VI with 1,878 passengers and crew strikes an uncharted asteroid. The impact overloads the navigational deflectors bringing the ship to a halt for repairs. The ship loses all power and in panic several lifeboats are launched. The affair creates a great deal of press and the "Lisetovar" project is erroneously named a rescue ship. More changes are therefore implemented on the salvage ship project, further complicating matters. 01 August The USS "Haven" (NCC-2514) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is launched. 02 August. The USS "Kongo" (NCC-1710) is fitted with 4 "Killer Bee" assault craft (replacing one of her standard shuttles) following her home port relocation to Ser Ty-Ty. 30 August The USS "Fimmschaal" (NCC-4853) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. The secession of Vulcan from the UFP is debated, and T'Pau dies on Vulcan. Contradicting this is T'Pau's presence at Spock's bonding to Saavik on Vulcan in 2329. Note that in 2373, the "Voyager's" holographic doctor will re-create T'Pau on a holodeck, part of his personality improvement program. 06 September The USS "Marchand" (NCC-4854) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. 27 September The USS "Espadon" (NCC-1961) "Knox" class frigate is laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding, Louisiana, Earth. 04 October The USS "Schneider" (NCC-4855) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. 16 October The USS "Matsurra" (NCC-2512) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is com- missioned. Noonian Soong is born. The cyberneticist will be instructed by the molecular cyberneticist Dr. Ira Graves in his younger years. In his later years he will develop the first androids with positronic brains. 17 "Cargile" class destroyers are converted to "Sands" class light exploration cruisers, making the production total 47 ships in all. November Following the ASDB's final evaluation of the unsuccessful Wright-Corder warp nacelle layout tested on "Avenger" class heavy frigates, Starfleet begins to procure a class of new-build medium cruisers precisely matching the "Avenger" class specifications. The first cruiser of this new class will be the USS "Miranda" (NCC-1833), commissioned less than two years later. 15 November The USS "Jein" (NCC-4856) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is com- missioned. 16 November The USS "Matapan" (NCC-1960) "Knox" class frigate is launched. During this era, the people of Risa become involved in a nearly continuous round of armed conflicts. It will take the UFP 3 attempts to bring the two sides to the bargaining table, with the Treadways eventually suc- ceeding c. 2291. Dr. McCoy learns from his 2 year old grandson, Conner, that his ex-wife had married Clayton Treadway and were diplomats on Chadric VII. 23 December The USS "Hai Din" (NCC-2518) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is laid down at Cosmadyne Corporation, Boston Shipyards, Earth. 2282, 14 February The USS "Bottke" (NCC-4857) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is com- missioned. By this time, problems with the Type 1/2B Phasers are largely solved, but its reputation is irreparably damaged with no hope for Sestra to regain the sole source supply of Starfleet. The 'supplementary' Type 1/2C has become too popular and is in widespread use. 17 February The USS "Haven" (NCC-2514) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is com- missioned. Admiral Androvar Drake is placed in charge of Starfleet's advanced strategic technology development programs, weapons research. One project he will head will be code-named Rising Star, a feasibility study for developing weapons using protomatter. When the project is abandoned, Drake gives Dr. Marcus a supply of protomatter for the Genesis Experiment. 15 March The USS "V'aacht" (NCC-4858) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is com- missioned. 30 March The USS "Briza" (NCC-2515) "Belknap" class strike cruiser is launched. 23 April The USS "Matapan" (NCC-1960) "Knox" class frigate is commissioned. 01 May The USS "Dart" (NCC-4859) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is com- missioned. The "Enterprise" makes second contact with the Calligar at Anomaly T-128 (Pike's Rift). Assembled for this historic event is Commodore Jose Tyler, Dr. Richard Daystrom, and Ambassador Robert Fox. Captain Kirk performs the marriage of Commodore Tyler to former Master Builder Ecma of the Calligar. The Tellarite government lodges a formal complaint with the UFP and declares war on the Calligar for the death of Shondar Dorkin. Dr. Daystrom will develop the groundwork for which holodeck technology would be derived from his study of the Calligarian worldmind. In a decade, a technician in the Cochrane Physics Hall of Starfleet Academy will have very much the same ideas in mind, using a skintight encounter suit to simulate an artificial environment. Although the basics of this device was originally developed some three decades earlier (circa stardate 3871.6) by Chief Engineers Lieutenant Commander Scott of the "Enterprise" and Projeff Ellis of the "Farragut." The starship "Enterprise" shortly thereafter was equipped with a holographic recreation room. Dr. Simone Van Gelder, granddaughter of Dr. Simon Van Gelder, will be the project leader (Federation Special Holographic Research Project Dimara) to develop the first practical true holodeck in the 24th Century. 20 May The USS "McGee" (NCC-4869) "Niven" class light attack cruiser is commissioned. She is the last of the "Niven" class vessels completed not only on time but unbelievably on budget, at the pace of 8 ships per year. Over the next 3 years, the "Arcturus" (NCC-1807), "Darion" (NCC-1810), and "Vena" (NCC-1817) "Tikopai" class heavy cruisers operating under the guise of various scientific expeditions, are each able to obtain vast amounts of information about Klingon activities. The vessel is placed on the reserve list for possible future use and retains her new name, since being in the middle of an extensive conversion it is not deemed cost effective to refit her back to the original configuration. At his mother's insistence, 20 year old Tuvok enters Starfleet Academy on Earth following 4 months of initial schooling on Vulcan. The "Avenger" class heavy frigates "Illustrious" (NCC-1963) and "Amiens" (NCC-1869) discover the Romulan outpost Rihannii outside Fleet Subquadrant 4 South. 26 August The USS "Shi Yan" (NCC-3218) "Ianar" class fast frigate is laid down at Starfleet Division, Guangzhou Docks, Earth. "Constitution (II)" class heavy cruisers begin to have their computer systems upgraded to Duotronic III variants on an individual ship basis. All but 6 "Barazi" class cruisers are decommissioned. The "Richthofen" class patrol cruiser is commissioned. A warp 11, single nacelle cruiser with warp 11 capacity, the "Richthofen" class is a fast and strong ship built to stop raids by an unknown species along the rimward border. At least 20 ships will comprise this class, ending the raids. An attempt is made to salvage the Transwarp Drive Project by pairing it with the Space Control Ship Project. This results ultimately in the USS "Excelsior" (NX-2000) class space control ship. With the Koeller UTI K27 transwarp engines, a maximum warp of 13 is achieved. The transwarp drive will be unofficially placed back on the research and development status in the next few years. In the fall of this year, the Coalition offers the Federation "an honorable peace" which would result in "demilitarization" of the Feder- ation's outer provinces (which would then be policed by Coalition "peacekeeping" patrols). The insignia of the "Akyazi"-"Arbiter"-"Akula" Perimeter Action Program is first used, consisting of 3 arrowheads representing the 3 sub-class designs. 25 December After months of intense negotiations of the finer points, Chairman Buckner meets with the Klingon Ambassador Extraordinaire Kaleen and Romulan Praetor Maxillus on Christmas Day for the formal ceremony. For reasons that are not entirely clear, the peace conference collapses into a wild melee and Vice Chairman Baranov succeeds Buckner. Baranov, inspires the military command with new confidence and announces that nothing would be acceptable short of victory. 2284, January "Akyazi" prototype test article evaluations continue on shell prototypes No. 2 & 3 at Temerand. Some changes include: improvement of recognition profile and stealth characteristics by the elimination of a 6th deck in the main hull; incorporation of the "Fier" LN-90 warp units into the design, replacing the larger LN-83 system; creation of a "double boom" structure to separate engineering functions from the main hull, resulting in greater warp maneuverability and enhanced safety characteristics. Prototype No. 1 is loaned to TacFleet for security evaluations. Dmitri Valtane transfers to the USS "Lamneth" as the ship's chief stellar cartographer with the rank of Lieutenant. He will serve on a 5-year mission of exploration into the Gurava Sector, ending in 2289. The Mark I "Renown" class light cruiser is commissioned. Unique extended torpedo launchers make this class unique. With advances in warp technology showing great promise, the Mark I is almost canceled before being accepted as a light cruiser. With minor internal changes completed, the M'Yengh Yards presents Starfleet with a powerful combat vessel as well as a capable research vessel that is less crew intensive than other comparable designs (a complement of only 272). The Mark I is also amazingly maneuverable, outclassing most destroyers and escorts. The "Renown" class will often be deployed on research missions near shipping lanes and outposts, where its maneuverability can be used against pirates and other raiders. Yet this Mark I design has only warp 8.5 capacity and will apparently be renamed USS "Ranger". 09 February The construction of 17 ships of the "Cyane" class (NCC-1890-1906) is approved. This class will be reduced to a total of 10 ships. This class almost results in the cancellation of the "Endurance" class conversions. March (stardate 8315.6) All major design features in the "Akyazi" are finalized and approved by the Requirements Board. Temerand develops modifications to the basic "Akyazi" design allowing the incorporation of the "lulus" Protective Envelope system and the AShore Leave (TOS) emergency impulse package. 13 March The USS "Renner" (NCC-3250) corvette is commissioned. Admiral Kirk meets Antonia. 16 June Work begins on the USS "Akyazi" (NCC-1010) perimeter action ship prototype at Arbing & Lidde Starship Construction, Boston, Earth. 28 June The USS "Bucke" (NCC-1020) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Newport News, Shipbuilding, Louisiana, Earth. 29 June Final shipyard approval for the "Endurance" class frigates is authorized. 03 July The USS "Kanpalu" (NCC-3221) "Ianar" class fast frigate is laid down at Szand Butu Ltd., Latar, Izar. 09 July The USS "Abreus" (NCC-1017) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding, Louisiana, Earth. July Temerand and Jeffries Transdimensional Dynamics announce they have developed a new "bottle containment" apparatus for the dilithium gas piping and antimatter conduit system. This development is the result of tests that revealed the formation of fissures in the propulsion shaft coupling units. These fissures were caused by an overtaxing of the coupling units during high-velocity (above warp 20) warp maneuvering of Prototype No. 2, resulting in partial or complete loss of the impulse amp- lification crystal. This necessitates the addition of a second, back-up amplification crystal to the "Akyazi" design. The containment apparatus will be perfected in time for inclusion in the "Arbiter" sub-class. [Y 174] In a victory for the Federation diplomatic corps, the Gorn join up with the UFP although little changes except for the length of the front line. The Romulans pull forces out of UFP territory to defend against an expected Gorn attack. The First General War has now reached virtually complete escalation. The Grand Alliance (Gorn-Federation-Kzinti) fleets battle Romulan-Klingon-Lyran fleets. The Hydrans have co-belligerant status with the Grand Alliance, but are not formal allies. The Orions begin operations against the Grand Alliance, using unprecedented numbers of ships. Over the next year, the war rages back and forth across the "devastated zones", the area of UFP territory within 3,000 parsecs of the original border. Occasional Alliance raids will reach the fringes of Coalition territory. The Orion Pirates sharply increase their raids (and the combat power of their ships) during this period. The Klingons and Romulans launch several raids on the Federation home worlds but never make a serious attempt to capture them. A faction of the Kzinti government attempts to negotiate a separate peace with the Klingons this year, and the "Admiral Kang" sets out on its most exciting voyage. However, this effort collapses when a "palace coup" by the Patriarch himself eliminates the defeatist faction. This is the nadir of the Grand Alliance; from this point on cooperation between the major Allies increases steadily. This period of the War (The War of the Devastated Zones) is known for a series of unusual incidents and battles, including the famous mutiny on the "Demonslayer," the rescue by Commodore Radley of a UFP squadron trapped in stasis fields, the mutiny of an entire squadron of Klingon ships from the mothball reserve fleet, a mysterious battle between a UFP NAnd the Children Shall Lead (TOS) and an unknown (but extremely powerful) Klingon frigate (which thereafter disappears and never reappears), and (perhaps the most unusual incident of all) the wild battle around the Orion station known as Mad Jack's Hole. The UFP gains steadily in the overall balance, and the Coalition gradually loses the ability to control the conduct of the war. The init- iative reaches parity when the Hydrans, with a new shipyard fully oper- ational in the Old Colonies, begin launching a series of major assaults on the Lyran "Firewall" bases leading to "the battle of the line." During this period, the ISC fast carrier resupply ship (Friday's Child (TOS)R) is launched, the Romulan fast carrier resupply ship (BHF--utilizing a "Battlehawk" hull) is operational, and the Klingon E7 heavy cruiser (assembled from an E4 and an F5W) is launched. The Federation's drone bombardment old light cruiser refit (And the Children Shall Lead (TOS)D+) is in service. The ISC superiority fighter (SF), carrying two Plasma D racks and two forward point defense phasers, is launched. The Jindarian "Meteor-2" fighter is also launched, carrying a large forward railgun, two prospecting charges, and two forward point defense phasers. This year the last CVS carrier, the USS "Almirante Lattore" (NCC-1959), is completed. The role of strike carriers is taken over by the NVS (new strike carrier) class built on the new light cruiser hull) starting with the "Hermes" and followed next year by the "Vikrant". Refinements to the "Akula" prototype configuration are necessary after poor results following warp field stability tests with the "Kratos" engines. Modifications include reconfiguration of the internal flux chillers, expansion of the intake vents, and new alignments for the support pylon propulsion shafts. Work on the "Belknap" class strike cruisers ends, with each year having produced 14 vessels. 29 July The USS "Akitsu" (NCC-1012) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Arbing & Lidde Starship Construction, Boston, Earth. 03 August The USS "Robust" (NCC-3251) "Renner" class corvette is commissioned. October Prototype No. 6 is shifted to the "Akula" test program after Star Fleet concludes weapons evaluations on the "Teviot" torpedo and JAThe Kobayashi Alternative (Computer Game) phaser systems in the "Arbiter" operational mode. The "Bia" deflector unit and a support pylon assembly will be fitted to evaluate the "Bia" MDS system and the Flocon-designed Tuch compact phaser mounts. Starfleet's Class One starship fleet consists of only 69 starship classes and 1,265 active ships. The USS Enterprise, at the request of Admiral Kirk, Director of Personnel, is reassigned to the Academy for use on rotation as an Academy midshipman training vessel. 11 November The USS "Tecumseh" (NCC-1893) "Cyane" class heavy frigate is laid down at Cosmadyne Corporation, Boston Shipyards, Earth. The Transwarp Drive System tests successfully on the USS "Excelsior" (NX-2000) testbed vessel. Commodore Robert Earl Day and the Strategic Design Power & Propulsion Team prematurely begin to develop a like system for the extant Class 1b starships. One of the first ship designs inspired by this transwarp breakthrough is the USS "Patton" class fast frigate. Based on the "Excelsior" class on a much smaller scale, the "Patton" has warp 14 capacity (though designed for warp 18 via Tandem TLN-2 1st generation transwarp units), 16 phaser emplacements, 4 torpedo tubes, and a ship's complement of 285. Starfleet Galaxy Exploration Command begins a study to design a new starship to replace the current heavy cruiser class, to be designed from the keel outwards. After some five designs are put forward and rejected, Starfleet rather sheepishly agrees that the ideal vessel for Galaxy Exploration is the "Enterprise" class. 24 November The USS "Eleusis" (NCC-1018) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Starfleet Division, Baltic Yards, Leningrad, Earth. Magna Roma (UFC 892-IV) begins to transform into a republic. The "Akyazi" class insignia is designed, representing the three sub- classes by three stylized starships warping to the edge of UFP space. "Hawkeye" class surveillance frigates are superceded by more capable designs and are converted to cargo configuration with aft phasers and torpedo launchers removed. Lateral aperatures for sensors are replaced with large cargo doors. The "Pegasus" class light cruiser is commissioned. Inspired by the old "Vagabond" class to solve problems developing in the "Explorer" class, the "Pegasus" sports a shorter, broader support strut to increase stability and front-saucer mounted photon torpedo tubes in the event of the loss of the nacelle assembly. With better than warp 10 capacity (via 2 side-mounted nacelles) and a crew of 300, the "Pegasus" class will be successful and serve as the basis for many of the elements found in the "Constellation," "Odysseus," and "Questar" classes. 15 January The USS "Accipiter" (NCC-1035) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Rapier Dynamics Group, Melbourne Division, Earth. 16 January A series of failures in both the antimatter conduit system and integrated coupling units during high-warp battle maneuvers leads to the loss of Pro- totype No. 8. The 9-member command crew escapes safely after jettisoning the entire bridge/lifeboat assembly; all 5 crewmembers in the engineering pod are killed. January The "Constellation" (NCC-1974) class star cruiser is authorized. The 4- nacelle long range exploration research vessel with a "laminate" hull, 6 multipurpose research bays, warp 9.2 capacity, and a standard complement of 532 will probably be delayed in production for a decade. Original armament is to consist of 12 standard phaser emplacements, 4 heavy phaser emplacements, and 4 torpedo tubes (mounted at the engine pylon junction points). Warp capacity, complement and ordnance will change by the 2290s, even the prototype's NCC. Initially 9 ships are authorized, including the USS "Hathaway" (NCC-2593). This might be the first major starship class to employ non-sequential naval construction contract numbers. The "Constellation" class starship "Starquest" (NCC-2894) will be one of the earliest casualties of this class following the loss of the lead ship in 2299. Starfleet Academy (Second Fleet) will name a residence hull in her honor. The USS "Salamis" (NCC-4341) "Larson" class destroyer is placed on in- active status. The USS "Ariannus" (NCC-2766) Mark IV "Loknar" class frigate is refitted to the Mark V configuration. The USS "Hephaestus" (NCC-26294) Mark II "Reliant" class cruiser enters service. Most Klingon territories along the UFP borders are now in the hands of more militant Imperial race family lines. Border incidents along the UFP/Klingon Neutral Zone (lying between the Triangle and the Orion colonial systems) become more frequent and more deadly. Starfleet begins refurbishing older ships and taking a more militaristic stance. The Klingon Empire decides to produce a new kind of ship to help push its borders out. Production begins on the D-21 "D'Ktahg" class attack cruiser. Many of Starfleet's missions involve interaction with known threats. Major General (Rear Admiral) Roger Kensington of the Starfleet Marines proposes that a weapon be procured for use by marines and starships near the potentially hostile borders. This weapon is to be a ruggedized, field serviceable phaser designed for the harsh treatment it may receive in combat situations. The Combat Phaser pistol will fill this niche. Near a sector of Meerkan space, the USS "Sangamon" (NCC-1927) escort carrier ("Santee" class) is damaged beyond repair while returning from a convoy assignment. Her attackers are believed to be Meerkan pirate vessels though their origins will never be positively confirmed. Sub- sequently, the ship will be decommissioned and scrapped, her name reas- signed to an "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship (NCC-1112). The Tellarites' Federation Peace Medal is adopted as a UFP award. 04 February The "Sheffield" (NCC-8778) "Saberhagen" class defense-substation is com- missioned. February The USS "Excelsior" (NCC-2000) class starships are authorized. A gargantuan version of the heavy cruiser class starship, the "Excelsior" is designed as a possible replacement for the "Enterprise" class heavy cruisers, as a testbed for the experimental transwarp drive, and as a space control ship prototype hull. Resultingly, the "Excelsior's" ship classification will range from heavy cruiser to battle cruiser to space control ship. Possessing at least warp 9.3 capacity, a crew of over 810, 32 phaser emplacements, and 4 photon torpedo banks, the "Excelsior" is believed capable of piercing the galactic energy barrier, making extra- galactic exploration possible in the future. This class will face exten- sive modifications in the future, beginning with the unsuccessful trans- warp engines (Koeller UTI K27 units) and the spawning of an "improved" starship known as the "Ingram" (NCC-2001) class space control ship, based upon the same general design of the "Excelsior." By the late 2280s, an "Excelsior class upgrade" variant will be authorized, featuring hull reinforcements and new engines incorporating design features from the transwarp project. The newer design will not be instituted for existing "Excelsior" class ship upgrades, however. This class consists of 97 proposed ships, of which some 78 will be constructed. Their names and naval construction contracts will be taken from "Constitution," "Bonhomme Richard," and "Achernar" class heavy cruisers (using 'B' suffix add-ons) as well as some non-sequential 5-digit NCCs. The proposed names and NCCs are confusing and may indicate that sister ships were later renumbered, possibly even renamed in certain cases. In the 2370s, the current "Excelsior" class starships will be designated Explorers. The "Midway" class light cruiser development project begins. The original design concept calls for a high speed, single engine light cruiser equipped with transwarp drive. The USS "Destrier" is refitted with her lateral phaser banks in the stardrive section eliminated, but compensated for by increasing the firepower of the remaining 8 banks. An upgraded sensor array is also installed. 12 February The USS "Ianar" (NCC-3214) fast frigate is commissioned. This class will total 36 vessels (NCC-3214-NCC-3249), designed to be extremely agile, very fast, and very tough for rapid response and 'surgical strike' missions. Each ship features warp 14 maximum speed, a complement of 318, 12 phaser emplacements, 2 photon torpedo banks, 1 bank of mines, and numerous tactical combat craft. 16 February Prototype No. 11 performs flawlessly under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Sori Descanta and the command crew that will be assigned to the "Kitkun" (NCC-1091). The prototype is put through a series of complicated maneuv- ers, readiness inspections, and war games exercises during a 4-day Admiralty Inspection event at Starbase 20. Eight vessels participate, with the prototype garnering a second-place scoring finish overall, sur- passed only by the "Engage" (NCC-1125). 19 February The USS "Dauntless" (NCC-3254) "Renner" class corvette is commissioned. February The Mark V "Babcock" class frigate enters service in Starfleet. March Construction on the USS "Akyazi" and "Akitsu" is delayed at Arbing & Lidde to allow for the incorporation of various design improvements, in- cluding modification and reinforcement of the bridge/lifeboat configur- ation and minor rearrangement of the internal bracing within the double boom structure. These changes are the result of improvements made in the prototypes during the "Arbiter" test program. [reference stardate 2/2003] The Klingons invade and capture Mrzicann, a small world outside the Organian Treaty Zone. This campaign represents the largest number of T-12 assault ship use. To prevent a repeat of this occurance, Starfleet steps up its monitoring of these assault vessels, keeping track of their location and movements. The Mark I "Kolm-An" class assault ship enters service. Housing 350 marines and all of their equipment (including tanks and assault shuttlecraft) for 30 days support on a hostile world, the "Kolm-An" carries a heftier amount of shipborne weaponry than the "Continent" or "Makin" class assault ships. This class is armed with 6 powerful phasers and 4 small photon torpedoes. The USS "Blade of Tellar" (NCC-26253) Mark I "Reliant" class cruiser is refitted to the Mark II configuration. The USS "Hera" (NCC-26297) Mark II "Reliant" class cruiser enters service. The S-8B class mobile repair facility enters service in the Klingon Empire. The Klingon L-9E class frigate enters service. Joran Belar composes a piece of music which will trigger buried memories in Jadzia Dax 86 years later. 29 March The USS "Nasan" (NCC-3215) "Ianar" class fast frigate is commissioned. 05 April The USS "Endurance" (NCC-1862) "Avenger" class heavy frigate is dry- docked at Cosmadyne Corporation, Boston Shipyards, Earth for conversion to the new "Endurance" class frigate specs. April The USS "Tog" (NCC-2799) Mark V "Loknar" class frigate and the USS "Demeter" (NCC-26295) Mark II "Reliant" class cruiser enters service. 11 April The USS "Vigilant" (NCC-1865) "Endurance" class frigate is relaunched The "Arbiter" class perimeter action ship NCC-1050 originally named "Atende" is renamed "Juist". The last of the Mark I "Bader" class scouts enter service. The D-32 "Z'gavva" ("Stronger Bird") class cruiser is commissioned in the Klingon fleet. Based directly upon the Romulan S-11 design, these ships carry over 142 personnel and have warp 8 capacity. 17 April The USS "Rnonkak" (NCC-3216) "Ianar" class fast frigate is commissioned. 22 April The USS "Dromio" (NCC-1866) "Avenger" class heavy frigate is drydocked at Starfleet Division, Puget Sound Yards, Earth for conversion to the "Endurance" class. The D-7C class cruisers, never fully accepted by Klingon captains, are withdrawn from service in the Klingon fleet. The USS "Joshua" (NCC-2700) class command cruiser enters service under the command of Captain Parker Grant. Utilizing a single transwarp drive unit derived from the "Excelsior" class, the ship has a maximum velocity of warp 21.89. Armed with 14 phasers and 3 torpedo tubes, the "Joshua" class will total 13 ships (NCC-2700-NCC-2712), resembling bloated destroyer/scout vessels. Having a complement of 490, "Joshua" class star- ships are designed to serve as the 'nerve centers' of UFP fleet activ- ities, able to coordinate the movements and actions of up to 70 vessels simultaneously. Note that the first three ships of the "Joshua" class, the USS "Joshua," "April," and "Hamilton" will be in service, and 5 more under construction, when a fatal flaw is discovered. Although the ships are quite well designed with admirable performance, their unique design and appearance makes them readily identifiable during fleet actions. This flaw will result in the untimely loss of several senior officers. The uncompleted ships of this class will be subsequently dismantled and scrapped, with the "Enterprise" class starships pressed into service as command cruisers while Starfleet ponders the next step. Their solution is the "Admiralty" class command cruisers: conversions of the older "Avenger/Reliant" class starships, retaining all of their offensive firepower and defensive capabilities with their exterior appearance retained to the maximum. The primary alterations and conversion work will take place on Deck 5 which will be transformed into a Command Deck nerve center for coordinating fleet activities. The first of this class is the USS "Halsey" (NCC-2768), with 3 others authorized: "King" (NCC-2765), "Nimitz" (NCC-2766), and "Leahy" (NCC-2767). May The USS "Loki" (NCC-502-B) class destroyer is authorized for construc- tion. Based upon the "Joshua" class command cruiser, the "Loki" class destroyers are ordered as replacements for the earlier destroyer classes ("Saladin," "Pompey," "Siva," "Cochise," and particularly the "Jenghiz") and carry the same names and registries (with the 'B' suffix addition). 93 vessels are proposed and 74 will be constructed (NCC-500-B-NCC-573-B), each possessing warp 9.2 capacity, 12 standard phaser emplacements, 3 (fore/aft firing) megaphaser cannon, and complements of 550. During mil- itary operations, the "Loki" will be used for point assault and hit-and- run defense, an effective fighting ship with its megaphasers and a high- density dual warp nacelle. Also based on the "Joshua" class command cruiser, the USS "Michael Adam" (NCC-5002-B) class scout is authorized for construction to replace the older "Anubus" scouts and class members carry the same 'B'-suffixed registries of the original vessels (NCC-5000-B-NCC-5097-B). All 98 pro- posed vessels will reportedly be constructed, each with warp 9.2 capacity, 12 standard phasers, 2 torpedo banks, and standard complements of 525. Very similar to the "Loki" class destroyers, the "Michael Adam" class scouts will be employed for patrols, surveillance, and UFP defense. 11 May The USS "Ameer" (NCC-1014) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Carina Design & Construction, Tanami Spacebridge, Australia, Earth. June Prototype No. 5 shifts to the "Akula" test program. She will perform the majority of testing and evaluation on a "B" version of the "Akula" design after it is announced by Starfleet that Axaanivus Celesco and Avondale Group will construct 11 ships closer in configuration to the "Akyazi"/"Arbiter" design. The Type 10 Phaser/Grenade Assault Cannon is developed. It will be standard ordnance issued to Starfleet Marines for EVA duty. This meter-long immensely powerful weapon has a stun setting (and grenade) range of 5000 meters, heat range of 200 meters, disrupt range of 3500 meters, and dematerialize range of 2000 meters. Features include a laser indicator spot targeting system, and a patch-in system making full use of the Mark 8 Battle Suit. Due to its enormous power, the Type 10 phaser is never armed or used aboard ship, and it lacks an overload option. This year also sees the introduction of the "Goblin" class heavy fighter. Nicknamed the "Terrible Turtle" by Starfleet's fighter crews, the "Goblin" class carries a crew of 3 but is slightly smaller than the "Lancer" class but can outperform it in every way. Burst speed is warp 9.5 and ordnance consists of 2 phasers and 1 micro torpedo launcher. This is the first fighter to carry dual phaser armaments and an early version of the micro torpedo. 800 "Goblins" will be produced. Captain Kevin Atkinson aids in the development of Megaphaser Cannon at Starfleet Tactical's Strategic Design Group. In the 2290s he will serve as the Chief Engineer of the starship "Kestral" (NCC-3000) superscout. Starfleet reluctantly begins decommissioning and scrapping the older Class 1 heavy cruisers. [reference stardate 2/2009] The Mark IV "Greyhound" class warpshuttle/courier vessels enter service. The D-10H "Riskahd" class Klingon cruisers enter service, mounting the command pods from L-9 frigates instead of the old style D-7 modules. The Klingons also begin using the "JiiKangj" ("Conqueror") class heavy battlecruiser. Derived from the "DaJiich" the "JiiKangj" is designed to augment the fleet of D7 battlecruisers along the UFP border, with warp 9 capacity, and a crew of 475. Armaments consist of 4 very heavy disruptors and 2 torpedo launcher. The Klingon L-13D battleships enter service. Klingon Admiral zantai Kaneida's mission into the Triangle ends. It is so successful that only one cruiser, two destroyers, and seven K-4 gunboats were lost. It inspires similar groups to form and operate within the Triangle and along UFP borders. 09 October The USS "Dromio" (NCC-1866) "Endurance" class frigate is recommissioned. October The USS "Poseidon" (NCC-26296) and "Chronos" (NCC-26298) Mark II "Reliant" class cruisers enter service. The "Merlin" class reconnaissance frigate is phased-out in the Romulan Star Empire. 19 October The USS "Melkotia" (NCC-1873) "Avenger" class heavy frigate is dry- docked at Starfleet Division, Puget Sound Yards, Earth for conversion to "Endurance" specs. [reference stardate 2/20] The Type 7 X-3 "Vas'calanam" ("Aviary") class border defense outpost enters service in the Romulan Star Empire. 28 October The USS "Shi Yan" (NCC-3218) "Ianar" class fast frigate is commis- sioned. 29 October The USS "Ebro" (NCC-1032) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Starfleet Division, Baltic Yards, Leningrad, Earth. 09 November The USS "Oberon" (NCC-1880) "Endurance" class frigate is relaunched. November A standard periodic examination reveals microscopic stress fractures and mild fatigue at certain points along the propulsion package support pylon assembly of Prototype No. 11. The cause is determined to be the different warp geometries. The other ships in the prototype fleet will be examined and a program implemented to redesign the structural reinforcement features of the propulsion support pylon assembly. It becomes evident that the continuation of the Genesis Project would require a level of funding, technological resources, and manpower that Dr. Marcus' private scientific consortium can no longer provide. A research grant proposal is made to the UFP's Department of Science. [reference stardate 2/2011] The USS Enterprise heavy cruiser undergoes an extensive overhaul, which includes the installation of an experimental Hyde-York photon torpedo launch system utilizing manual loading and prelaunch control, in the newly-completed space dock facility. The system handles the Beltesha Missile Systems' new Mark VI torpedo. Also at this time Main Engineering is fitted with a dilithium reactor room (adjacent to the port side one-man service lift and the radsuit locker) providing direct access to the main energizer's dilithium couplings via a double-walled radiation- proof swivel lock door. Other upgrades to Engineering at this time may include the addition of several banks of monitor/control boards. The Mark I "Finder" class search and rescue corvette enters service. With warp 9 capacity and no weapons, the power of the "Finder" goes directly to its movement. With medium powered shields, the "Finder" is efficient and fast for its mission of finding and aiding a ship in trouble. The ship can house 200 humanoid sized life forms and up to 500 in an emergency situation, its sickbay containing 40 advanced medical couches. The USS "Que Dane" (NCC-2791) Mark IV "Loknar" class frigate is refit- ted to the Mark V configuration. March Commander Mandala Flynn is promoted to Captain and given command of the USS "Magellan" explorer, one of 4 "Galaxy" class ships including the "Andromeda," "M-31," and "Magellanic Clouds". Several TacFleet officials announce they are displeased with the velocity limitations of the basic "Akula" design. TacFleet later is satisfied with the maximum velocity of warp 18.5 considering their enhanced defensive capabilities. The Trill symbiont Dax is joined with the 5th host, Torias, married to Nilani Kahn. In less than a year, Torias Dax leaves the Symbiosis Institute on Trill for Earth's spacedock facility. Saved from total destruction by the ETS (emergency transporter suit), the symbiont is transferred to the host body of Joran Belar. Joran Dax is a serial killer who will murder 3 women on Trill, with the obsession of making holo recordings of the moment of death while playing key notes. Verjyl Gard and Kov apprehend him before committing another murder, but Joran Dax is impaled during the altercation. The Dax symbiont is implanted into Curzon, and the records are altered to hide the fact that nearly half the population of Trill are capable of being joined, including initiate rejects--Joran Dax being hte first unsuitable host to survive joining. The USS "Deyan" (NCC-4451) "Larson" class destroyer is lost, her where- abouts unknown. Admiral Josef Cookston addresses the Military Appropriations Committee. The Type A "K'Teremny" class destroyer is commissioned by the Klingons. Thought to be the wave of the future, they will receive a crushing blow when two squadrons are destroyed along the Romulan border by a single V-6 on a retaliation mission for an earlier Klingon attack. Battle reports indicate that their lack of movement had allowed the larger cruiser to outmaneuver and eventually outgun the squadrons. The USS "Avenger" (NCC-1860) and USS "Alacrity" (NCC-1881) heavy frigates defeat the heavy cruisers "Farragut" (NCC-1702) and "El Dorado" (NCC-1722) by substantial margins at the renowned "Balikatan" war games. June The USS "Isis" (NCC-26300) Mark II "Reliant" class cruiser enters service. The Klingon L-42B class frigate enters service. More powerful than the L-42A, with reinforced superstructure, it is less maneuverable. This year, the "D'Ktahg" class Klingon heavy fighter is superceded by more efficient designs and most examples of this type are either scrapped or modified to the "Targ" configuration. The nominal class name "D'Ktahg" is apparently carried over to a newly commissioned D-21 attack cruiser. The Type A "D'Ktahg" class carries a ship's complement of 359 and possesses warp 9.7 capacity. However, the D-21 will be a dismal failure as an attack vessel when serious flaws in systems become apparent. By the end of its first year of production, 3 A models will have been destroyed and one scrapped after overzealous Klingon captains had engaged Romulan and Federation heavy cruisers with superior ranged weapons. It was found that the "D'Ktahg" was lacking a rear firing torpedo and improved shields, along with other ship systems. [Y 176] With the front line stabilized and the Federation economy churning out new ships faster than the Coalition can kill them (and the Coalition economy just beginning to falter), the Federation goes on the strategic offensive. Knowing full well that any offensive would have to be limited in scope and focused on a specific and valuable objective, Starfleet Command decides on a drive toward the Tholians to separate the Klingons and the Romulans. Such a move would divide the Coalition (preventing them from moving sup- plies and ships back and forth), make optimum use of the UFP's interior lines, draw ships from both the major Coalition powers away from the badly damaged Federation allies, reduce the effectiveness of the Romulan KR class ships by cutting them off from spare parts they could not supply themselves, and ultimately allow the Alliance to force a separate peace on the Romulan Star Empire. The Federation drive, called Operation Wedge, is coordinated with a Hydran assault on the Lyran Firewall bases and with a Gorn feint at the Romulan home worlds. One of the most spectacular Hydran failures takes place at this time when a Hydran squadron, trapped with its back to a gas giant, is cut to ribbons by Klingon forces. The Lyrans begin launching raids into the Old Colonies area to disrupt convoys supporting the forward-deployed Hydran forces. Hydran attacks on Lyran Firewall bases will continue without success into 2288. The Klingon front is disrupted by a deep raid by Commodore Mitchell's squadron, which de- stroys a key Lyran supply base, forcing the Lyran fleet on the UFP front to transfer back to the Kzinti sector (or perhaps just giving the Lyrans an excuse to do so). This plan has several advantages. Striking at the junction of Klingon and Romulan space would take advantage of the divided command. The Tholians are fiercely neutral, despite several minor Coalition attacks on their borders, will in effect move the edge of the galaxy closer to the Federation start lines. The neutralized Orion cluster will, under the right circumstances, return to full membership in the Federation, allowing a bloodless conquest of one-third of the neces- sary distance to the Tholian border. Several alternative operations for the first Federation strategic counter-offensive (as opposed to the numerous local counterattacks) are considered and rejected. Ultimately the plan succeeds. Strong drives knock out key Klingon and Romulan bases, and a swift maneuver encircles the Orion enclave and forces them (although not the pirate fleet) to return to the Federation. The second stage of the drive in the fall of this year reaches the Tholian border, and the Tholians tentatively accept a "friendly power" status just short of an outright alliance with the Grand Alliance. They will not allow UFP ships into their territory. Throughout the year there are continual operations along the front line between the Federation and the Klingons and Romulans. In one such battle, a Klingon fleet launches a deep raid behind Federation lines but are barely able to escape after their frigate squadron (the deepest penetrating unit) gets trapped and annihilated. There is also a brief attempt by one Romulan commander (Admiral Tiercellus) to negotiate a separate peace (not for the Romulans; just for his fleet) with the Gorn. Alliance historians will regard this as a false effort used to trap a key Gorn warship, but Coalition historians will insist that it was a genuine effort and the cloaked ships in the area were simply there to guard against Gorn treachery. This is the most significant event in a year of continuous combat on the Gorn-Romulan border, and the start of the ISC's expansion policy. The Interstellar Concordium begins to move into Romulan territory this year, followed by their first incursion into Gorn territory one week later. During this period the Andromedan "Ravager" (Return of the Archons (TOS)V) ships ("Conquistador" variants armed with one heavy and two light tractor repulsor beams) and "Instigator" (INS) ships ("Intruder" variants armed with one heavy and four light tractor repulsor beams) arrive in our galaxy. Hydran "Buffalo Hunter" fusion war destroyers (DWolf in the Fold (TOS)), "Lion Hunter" war destroyer leaders (DWL), and "Rhino Hunter" hellbore war destroyers (DWH) are launched. The Romulans launch their "SeaHawk Leader" frigate leader (SEL), the Kzinti their mobile carrier/war destroyer carrier (DWV), while the Gorn launch their battle destroyer carrier (BDV) and fast carrier resupply ship (Friday's Child (TOS)R). The Klingons launch a series of ships: F5W war destroyer, war destroyer leader (For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky (TOS)C), mobile carrier (For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky (TOS)V), For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky (TOS)VK variant, and the Z-H heavy fighter. The Z-H carries four Type 1 and two Type 6 drones, an electronic warfare pod, two forward short-range disruptors, and forward and rear arc defensive phasers. The parade version of the "Akyazi" class insignia, focusing on three stylized vectors at the center of its design, is first used. "Lancer" class heavy fighters are transferred to reserve forces. The first field test of the Genesis Matrix is initiated in the sealed underground space of Regula after being sufficiently hollowed out and confirmed to be free of gaseous particles. The Genesis planet is created from the Mutara Nebula. In the future, the "Reliant's" name will be honored by having a residence hull at the First Fleet Starfleet Academy named for her. stardate 8128.76 Captain Spock mindmelds with Dr. McCoy, transferring his Katra to the doctor. Spock dies in the line of duty from radiation poisoning while manually repairing the main energizer needed to power the warp engines of the "Enterprise" and escape the detonating Genesis Device. stardate 8128.7 In the alternate timeline of stardate 3135.1, there is no Kirk to return to the Genesis planet and Spock's Katra remains in McCoy, eventually to be placed in the Hall of Ancient Thought on Vulcan. McCoy retires from active service and the "Enterprise" will be decommissioned shortly thereafter. stardate 8141.6 The "Enterprise" departs the Mutara system to pickup the crew of the "Reliant" marooned on Ceti Alpha V. 30 January The USS "Pi Quaran" (NCC-3238) "Ianar" class fast frigate is laid down at Szand Butu Ltd., Latar, Izar. With enough Type 1/2B Phasers in service, the older phasers are retired to reserve stocks. As many as 5000 are shipped to Starfleet Academy to become part of its historical collection. stardate 8210.01 The Requirements Analysis Board (under the direction of Fleet Admiral Harry Morrow) issues its controversial recommendation for the decommis- sioning of "Enterprise" class starships as more vessels of the cheaper, but less versatile, "Tikopai" class become available. Starfleet receives a message that Captain Mandala Flynn of the "Magellan" ("Galaxy" class) starship, exploring the Andromeda galaxy, completed the first close-range observation of a supernova. stardate 8210.3 Admiral James Kirk, in direct violation of Starfleet orders, takes the "Enterprise" to Genesis. The "Enterprise" is self-destructed upon encountering a Klingon "Bird of Prey" scout commanded by Captain Kruge, also responsible for the destruction of the USS "Grissom" (NCC-638) superscout/survey vessel. Kruge dies in combat, and the Genesis planet breaks up into an asteroid belt. Admiral Kirk and his officers capture the Klingon scout ship intact, recover the Genesis Wave-regenerated Captain Spock, and spend the next three months in exile on Vulcan. Maltz, one of the Klingon officers taken into custody, will help the Federation Scientific Research Council in the preparation of 'The Klingon Dictionary.' Maltz, from the House of Grokan, will become a bounty hunter consult to Hakon within the next century. In the 2370s, the object of outwitting Commander Kruge before the destruction of the Genesis planet will become the object of one of Reginald Barclay's holodeck programs. Shortly after the destruction of the Genesis Planet, Starfleet disposes of its entire supply of protomatter. Admiral Drake is able to produce records proving that all of the supply is accounted for. February The Klingon S-4A class repair tenders are phased out by the S-4B class repair tenders. The USS "Nichter" (NCC-2102-B) class dreadnought is authorized. Of this class, all 50 proposed ships are replacements for the "Star League" class dreadnoughts, and bear the same names and NCCs with 'B' suffixes (NCC-2100-B-NCC-2149-B). At least 38 will be constructed, each having warp 9.5 capacity, 32 phaser emplacements, and 4 torpedo banks. These ships are capable of mass destruction and will be used to display a show of force in troubled areas. During military operations, the "Nichter" class dreadnought will be used as a point assault ship and for main-line defense. The USS "Rothwell" (NCC-1401-B) class light cruiser is authorized. A lightly armed, general purpose exploration vessel, the "Rothwell" ships are replacements for the earlier "Shanks" class light cruisers and retain their names and NCCs (with the addition of 'B' suffixes). 98 ships are proposed (NCC-1400-B-NCC-1497-B) and at least the first 43 will be built. The "Rothwell" carries a standard ship's complement of 858, has a warp capacity of 9.2, and an ordnance of 24 phasers and 2 torpedo tubes. The USS "Chryse" (NCC-4453) "Larson" class destroyer is sold to a pri- vate sector. The USS "Toronto" (NCC-2771) and "Mantilles" (NCC-2784) Mark IV "Loknar" class frigates are refitted to the Mark V configuration. The "Solaris" class utilizes the original ships' names and is unique for its extremely warp dynamic secondary hull design. April The Chief of Starfleet Command orders that all remaining "Enterprise" class starships be retained in active service, and that they undergo systems refurbishing during regular overhauls to permit them to once again be assigned to deep-space exploration. With the "Jenshahn" (NCC-2215) heavy carrier and "Chosin" (NCC-2610) attack carrier classes in great demand throughout the fleet, the procure- ment of 12 additional ships is approved. To avoid the funding battles between both classes, a third class is proposed: the "Youngblood" (NCC- 2263) heavy carrier. The largest warship in the Klingon fleet, this mammoth ship is commissioned into service prior to the testing of the UFP's "Excelsior" class and for a short period of time the balance of power along the borders turns in favor of the Klingons. The L-24 uses the most powerful warp and impulse engines in the Klingon inventory yielding a highly efficient maneuver ratio and allowing a sustained speed of warp 6 for long periods of time (warp 8 is maximum). The ship's 480 troops and their 8 light support vehicles are capable of being transported to the ground in less than 7 minutes. In addition the ship carries a crew of 1,070. Meanwhile, in the Romulan Empire, the Type 5 V-6 "S'ten Vastam" ("Gallant Wing") cruiser ends its service life. All ships of this type have been converted over to the Type 7 V-6 configuration. The USS "Phobos" (NCC-2786) Mark IV "Loknar" class frigate is refitted to the Mark V configuration. The USS "Hai Din" (NCC-2518) "Belknap" class strike cruiser departs her home port Star Station Cepheus with the heavy cruiser "Betelgeuse" (NCC- 1822) to conduct an extended-duration exploratory mission outside of Sub- quadrant 3 north. He meets with a select committee of Federation Council members, ranking Starfleet officials, and Federation Supreme Court Justices. Describing Admiral James T. Kirk, in his role in the Genesis Project, as a pirate and interstellar criminal who has recklessly endangered peace in known space, Kiltarc demands that Kirk be turned over to the Klingon Diplomatic Corps to stand trial in the Klingon Empire for his crimes. The Federation Council President responds that if Kirk is going to stand trial anywhere, he will do so within the Federation and under Federation jurisprudence. At the moment, however, Kirk is immune to prosecution while recieving political asylum from Ambassador Sarek on Vulcan. stardate 8390 Enroute to Earth to face court-martial, Admiral Kirk and his officers are forced to employ the light speed breakaway factor to the Klingon scout ship, to time warp into Earth's past (1986 O.C.). A Cetacean Probe is diverted from Earth with the help of two Humpback whales saved from extinction via time travel. Note that while in Earth's past, Captain Spock developed a means of recrystallizing dilithium crystals via high-energy photons (probably the precursor of the 24th Century's theta-matrix compositing system). In less than 4 years, dilithium will be practically worthless as a barter medium in the Federation. stardate 8391.4 In the alternate timeline begun stardate 3135.1, there is no Admiral Kirk and Captain Spock in exile to return to Earth aboard a commandeered Klingon Bird of Prey. The Cetacean Probe continues its assault on Earth, sterilizing the planet and creating an entirely new ecosystem. The Federation Council and Starfleet Command will eventually be relocated to Vulcan. 27 April In an unmistakable attempt to gain information on A Piece of the Action (TOS) performance char- acteristics, the Klingon battle skiffs "K'trk" and "K'lss" venture more than 7 parsecs into UFP territory. The "Akitsu" (NCC-1012) is forced to challenge the ships near Korta Fe. The Klingons respond with disruptor fire and the initiation of a predetermined attack maneuver. The "Akitsu" jumps to warp and in less than 2 minutes eliminates the offensive capabil- ity of "K'trk" and forces the retreat of the badly damaged "K'lss." This is the first "Akyazi" class encounter with Klingon forces. 29 April The USS "Beuel" (NCC-1026) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is launched. Primarily used to transport troops and fighter craft into battle, this class is armed with 3 megaphasers, 20 standard phasers, and 2 torp- edo banks. All 85 proposed ships (NCC-1900-B-NCC-1983-B) are replacements for earlier frigates of the "Knox" class and carry complements of 645 with warp 9.2 capacity. 71 vessels will be built. The USS "Langley" (NCC-1915-B) frigate of this class will be active during the Wolf 359 battle in 2367. 10 May The USS "Acerra" (NCC-1049) "Arbiter" class perimeter action ship is commissioned. 12 May The USS "Biisk" (NCC-1022) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is commissioned. 15 May The USS "Briza" (NCC-2516) "Belknap" class strike cruiser departs on an exploratory mission in Subquadrant 4 south, expected to last over two years. The "Tribble Ship" mystery regarding the USS "Mundy" is solved when two of its crewmembers are found in an asteroid cluster, somehow having been missed when the search parties checked the area for survivors. They reveal that they had been boarded by a band of renegade Klingons who, when they discovered that the cargo was tribbles, became so infuriated that they killed the captain and officers and left the crewmen on the asteroid. 23 May The USS "Echo" (NCC-1042) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Carina Design & Construction, Tanami Spacebridge, Australia, Earth. 26 May The USS "Satun Fatu" (NCC-3241) "Ianar" class fast frigate is laid down at Ariin Associated Ind., Khagris, Andor. The USS "Joshua Paul" (NCC-1830-B) class heavy frigate is authorized for construction. This class features warp 9.2 capacity, 20 standard phasers, 4 (fore/aft firing) megaphaser cannon, and complements of 1,053. They are replacements for the older "Avenger" class heavy frigates and numbered accordingly (NCC-1830-B-NCC-1890-B). At least 46 will be con- structed. Project Grey Ghost returns and is heralded a complete success. Starfleet gains important information on the nature, organization, and threat capabilities of the Romulan Star Navy. The "Scorpio" class corvette enters service. 192 of these 4-man, warp 9 capacity ships will be constructed. They will supplement Starfleet's monitors, most of which restricted to in-system or near-base patrols, extending the defensive range of bases or systems requiring protection. 27 June The USS "Arashi" (NCC-1051) "Arbiter" class perimeter action ship is commissioned. 11 July The USS "Akita" (NCC-1038) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is commissioned. 12 July The USS "Savannah" (NCC-1894) "Cyane" class heavy frigate is commis- sioned. 24 July The USS "Do' Lomi" (NCC-3243) "Ianar" class fast frigate is laid down at Ariin Associated Ind., Khagris, Andor. The USS "Almdes" (NCC-1067) "Arbiter" class perimeter action ship is laid down at Starfleet Division, Puget Sound Yards, Earth. [Y 177] With the links between them cut, the Coaltion begins a series of attacks on the Federation to regain the territory and reopen the routes. When these fail, the Coaltion (perhaps in frustration) looks toward Tholian territory as a possible new route. This is yet another strategic mistake that will change the course of the General War and the nature of the al- liances. The Klingons, based on the success of a local attack by a fighter swarm that destroyed a Tholian battle station, reason that the Tholians can be easily conquered and that the Federation is too overex- tended to provide them with any significant aid. The Tholians occupied what had once been Klingon territory--and the Klingons want it back. The Lyrans argue against the drive, saying it would simply add dozens of ships to the Alliance forces. The Romulans argue against it because their cloaked ships are vulnerable to Web. The Romulans launched the last raid on the Federation home worlds, devastating Rigel IV. Their loss of the dreadnought "Consul" in the attack brought an end to strategic penetration attacks by the Coalition. Thereafter, the Romulans make only token at- tacks but do tie down some Alliance forces. The Klingons persist and launch a series of furious attacks that will last the entire year. All new Klingon production is thrown into Operation Nutcracker, along with the strategic reserves. The Klingons finally pull out of the "firewall" bases on the Hydran front, leaving them to the Lyrans. The Lyrans "temporarily" take over sections of Kzinti territory to release Klingon fleets for the attack and (for the one and only time) send a full squadron of ships to the Tholian border. Some Lyran ships return to the Federation border, but the limited logistical support in the sector makes it difficult to support them, and the UFP continually raids their tenous supply line, keeping them from being effective. In a desperate panic, the Tholians allow Gorn and Kzinti squadrons to enter their space and participate in the defense against the Klingon (and to a lesser extent Romulan) onslaught. This is the first significant deployment of Kzinti and Gorn forces outside of their own territory, and the first time outside the range of their own supply lines. It will provide valuable lessons for future operations, such as the upcoming Operation Remus. Many new vessels are launched during this period including: the Federation mobile carrier (DWV); Klingon war destroyer (F5WK), war destroyer leader refit (For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky (TOS)L), and E6 heavy cruiser (a three-engined E4 variant using a smaller hull); Kzinti drone bombardment war destroyer (SDW); and Hydran mobile carrier (DWV) and "Buffalo" scout war destroyer (DWS). The Orion mobile carrier is also operational. Federation fighters are launched: the F-18B fighter, carrying two special rails, and increased speed; the A-20 "Avenger" heavy fighter, carrying four Type 1 drones and an anti-drone rack with 6 warheads, an electronic warfare pod, and fore and aft expanded arc point defense phasers; and the F-111 "Aardvark" heavy drone fighter, carrying a fore defensive phaser, a rear point defense phaser, a forward expanded arc gatling point defense phaser, a built-in electronic warfare pod, two chaff packs, four drone rails under each wing, and a weapons bay holding three "spaces" of weapons or other equipment. The Klingons also launch a fighter: the Z-Y superiority fighter, carrying two Type 1 and two Type 6 drones, two special rails, and two forward point defense phasers. The Kzinti launch their A Taste of Armageddon (TOS)AS (Tactically Advanced Attack Shuttle fighter), carrying two Type 1 and Type 6 drones, and two forward point defense phasers. The Hydran "Super-Sting" heavy fighter is launched, carrying two forward fusion beams, two gatling point defense phasers, one rear expanded and one forward expanded arc, a forward hellbore and an electronic warfare pod. The Federation heavy fighter carrier (NVH) and heavy battlecruiser (Bread and Circuses (TOS)G) are also launched. The heavy battlecruiser is the USS "Kirov" (NCC-1751). [reference stardate 2/22] The Type 1 V-24 "D'vas" ("Great Bird") class cruiser enters service in the Romulan Empire. Deciding to give the Klingons a taste of their own medicine (after their operating of Romulan designs based on the S-11 scout), the V-24 mounts 4 photon torpedo tubes (2 fore and 2 aft) and 6 disruptors (2 aft, the rest fore and lateral). 11 August The USS "Fredrikstad" (NCC-2204) shuttlecarrier is commissioned. 12 August The USS "Arauca" (NCC-1029) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship is commissioned. On stardate 8922.6, she will encounter heavily-armed, unidentified spacecraft at the Subquadrant 4 north perimeter. By stardate 8922.79, the "Arauca" will engage the vessels after being fired upon three times, inevitably to result in the perimeter action ship's destruction but not before inflicting significant amounts of damage on several of the un- identified units. 24 August The USS "Akula" (NCC-1090) perimeter action ship is launched. 26 August The USS "Ding Hai" (NCC-3244) "Ianar" class fast frigate is laid down at Starfleet Division, Guangzhou Docks, Earth. 27 August The USS "Regal" (NCC-3270) "Renner" class corvette and the USS "Araxes" (NCC-1030) "Akyazi" class perimeter action ship are com- missioned. September In the Klingon Empire, the Model A D-12 "Kh'exrilin" ("Death Boot") class cruiser enters service. The "Excelsior" (NCC-2000) class upgrade is authorized. Although termed 'upgrade,' existing ships will not be refitted, only new-build "Excelsiors" will be constructed to the new specs. These include hull reinforcements on either side of the navigational deflector (after a few prototypes experienced heavy damage in relatively light battles), addit- ional hangar decks, and nacelles of a more sophisticated design. Some 62 ships are authorized (of which 19 are proposed, not necessarily built), all possessing the 'B' suffix NCC addition, and retaining their original heavy cruiser names. The USS "Jonathan Levy," one of the most active exploration ships of its time, surveys Domarus IV and fails to detect the Shapers. 15 September The USS "Atago" (NCC-1052) "Arbiter" class perimeter action ship is commissioned. The prototype USS "Ryan" is lost with all hands. Emil Costa is born. The "Soyuz" class frigates are withdrawn from service. A lightweight, dilithium energized weapon, it is meant to be used by a trained marine or security specialist. Intended solely for combat usage and more rugged than previous units, there is no detachable hand-held unit and unlike most other phasers it features moving parts (toggles and thumb verniers) ideal for field combat. Using the same LiCu 514 crystal as the Type 1/2C, it is larger for greater throughput resulting in increased effective range and higher intensities, and will be an unqualified success when issued next year. It has a maximum stun range of 100 meters, heat range of 30 meters, disrupt range of 200 meters, dematerialize range of 200 meters, and overload blast radius of 1000 meters. 23 November The USS "Tani Gratan" (NCC-3246) "Ianar" class fast frigate is laid down at Szand Butu Ltd., Latar, Izar.
