The USS "Ariel" (NCC-2200), lead ship of an all-new shuttlecarrier class, is laid down at Starfleet Division, Puget Sound Yards, Earth. The "Ariel" class lead ship had its origin in a proposal for the heavy cruiser redesign (obsolete stardate 7412.1) which eventually yielded the "Enterprise" class. In its original form, the great delta-winged starship was to be much smaller with only one flight deck at the stern. Tests revealed that the warp dynamics of this shape were greatly enhanced with a much larger "belly" area, however, and the size and purpose were thus changed.
[USS Enterprise Heavy Cruiser Evolution Blueprints, USS Enterprise Officers Manual (TOS)]
The remaining 7 unaltered "Aerie" class heavy carriers are converted to fleet support vessels. All armaments are stripped out, and a single phaser is mounted under the fantail (as in the earlier "Aerie" refit design). Fighter support systems are removed and the interior is reconfigured for fleet support missions, with fabrication and repair facilities installed, and additional cargo space provided by the empty fighter bays.

3 months and 6 days after the mysterious Kauld suicide attack of Belle Terre, their intent is revealed: Belle Terre had been seeded with self-replicating nanoassemblers yielding siliconic gel to smother the life out of the colony. A canyon emergency shelter is constructed on the planet while the "Enterprise" traces an automated tight-beam laser transmission to a Kauld listening outpost. Spock mind-melds with Yanorada, a Kauld commander, and extracts the 7-note code required to deactive the nanoassemblers. The conestoga "Northwest Passage" is transformed into a ship bomb, effectively wiping out an amassed fleet of 61 Kauld warships. Lilian Coates dies from the siliconic gel. Ship-mounted sonic projectors halt the gel's spread across Belle Terre and breakdown the existing substance.

Billy Maidenshore takes control of the converted olivium chaser "Pandora's Box" and captures Commanders Uhura and McCoy's shuttle. Mysterious thefts of olivium are traced to alien robot probes programmed to return the olivium ore back to the Quake Moon. The cruiser "Peleliu" arrives to replace the "Enterprise" as guardian of the Belle Terre system. While the "Enterprise" investigates the probe thefts, the "Peleliu" is assaulted by Kauld warships and left a space junk, with Captain Roger Lake unhinged and unconscious. Lieutenant Commander Nick Keller assumes command and manages to return to Belle Terre. Uniting the colonists and the remaining crew, a new ship is built in only 16 days from the scraps of colonial vessels: the "Mongrel" class composite frigate "Challenger" (OV91951-L). Upon seeing the new vessel the Kauld surrender and beg for sanctuary for fear of the Blackness that consumed the "Rattlesnake" last year. Contact is established with Multimillennial intradimensional beings who outfit the starship with technology to capture their runaway Cold Factor neutralizer (a predecessor of the smaller olivium probes) and leave the remaining olivium for the colonists. Maidenshore is taken into custody after Uhura's and McCoy's sabotage of the "Pandora's Box". The "Enterprise" departs the Belle Terre system for the last time, her mission completed.

The construction of "Hatfield" (NCC-2000) class command cruisers is auth- orized. These ships, like the dreadnoughts, employ 3 nacelles yielding warp 9 capacity. 31 ships are proposed (NCC-2000-NCC-2030) with at least the first 20 actually built. They will be armed with 2 torpedo tubes, 2 megaphasers (4 cannon), and 18 standard phaser emplacements. The USS "Wildfire" (NCC-2027) will still be in service in the 24th Century, assigned to Starfleet Academy (First Fleet) as a training vessel.

The "Raven" class heavy countermeasures fighter begins entering service in the Romulan Empire. A very fast, fighter-sized vessel carrying only 2-3 personnel, it is designed to escort a flight of fighters to penetrate enemy-held regions of space using a cloaking device to avoid detection. Carrying a large aft sphere containing a cloaking device, its cloaking field can encompass a fairly large volume of space behind the "Raven" to hide fighters. The "Raven" is unarmed, has warp 7.8 capacity, and is apparently derived from the "Starhawk" heavy fighter.

The "Firestone" (NCC-8600) class battle cruiser is authorized for con- struction. Yet another dreadnought variant, the "Firestone" is designed to deliver large amounts of support firepower during hostile situations. This class carries a standard complement of 450, has warp 9 capacity, and an impressive ordnance of 14 standard phaser emplacements, 2 megaphaser mounts, and 8 torpedo tubes. The "Firestone" class will consist of at least 30 ships (NCC-8600-NCC-8629) out of an initially proposed 35. In the 24th Century, at least one starship of this class will be in service: the USS "Zahn" (NCC-8606), assigned to Starfleet Academy (Third Fleet) as a training vessel.

A series of incidents on the Klingon-Kzinti border occur (an undeclared war). Kumerian destroys Kzinti shuttle squadron #26, and is promoted to command the D6 "Destruction." The Klingon D6 "Devastator" operates as an experimental semi-carrier and conducts several raids on the Kzinti frontier to test fighters. Operating with a Klingon convoy, the "Devastator" is attacked, the Kzinti fighters heading straight for the experimental carrier. Two Klingon Internal Security Forces E3D drone escorts come to the carrier's defense. This is said to be the first "carrier duel" in space, and the Klingon Deep Space Fleet notes the need for a dedicated carrier escort, and modifies some of its E3s to E3Es, housing limited Aegis systems. Concerned for proper defense of their carriers, the Klingon DSF also deploys several E4E escorts for its car- riers. Unlike the E4, the E4E is a totally anti-fighter design, its two disruptors replaced with anti-drone defense, and also incapable of separ- ating its boom from the hull. William Gerard graduates from the Academy. Orion pirates attack the Zeta Omicron station. The Kzinti corvettes enter service. The Federation-Kzinti articles of agreement are signed. The Federation heavy cruiser USS "Yorktown" (NCC-1704) suffers a systems failure in an asteroid belt and is attacked by Klingons. The Federation destroyer leaders enter Starfleet duty. Orion pirates attack a Feder- ation starliner. Orion Attack Raiders begin pirate service. The Kzinti double-cross the WYN, and destroy the WYN E4 Klingon escort. Ensign Peltier graduates from Starfleet Academy. The Lyrans receive UIMs and DERFACS from the Klingons and begin deploying them on starship disruptors and also begin refits. With the General War fast approaching, the LDR deploys military police destroyers, feeling a need for more powerful star- ships. The war destroyer also begins service in the LDR fleet. The Kzinti C-series (comprehensive) refits begin, and the Kzinti carrier, light carrier, battlecruiser, escort carrier, and exploration ship (a light carrier hull modified as a survey cruiser) all enter service. The Klingon Hangar pod and carrier tug enter service. The Romulan commando "Hawk," commando "Eagle," and KRG Klingon-designed commando cruiser all enter service. The Jindarian "Meteor-1" fighters enter service. The Andromedan "Intruders" are first observed, using power absorber panels, displacement devices, tractor-repulsor beams, and transporter operations using class 4 units. The Andromedan "Cobra" destroyer, courier scout, "Bull Snake" cargo ship, "Viper" frigate, repair sled, ore-gathering sled, cargo sled, and mine-laying sled are all first sighted in our galaxy. The Klingons temporarily set aside plans to destroy the Krebiz due to the General War, and the Krebiz learn of these plans. Officially declaring neutrality during the General War, the Near Side Krebiz desperately scour the portions of the galaxy surrounding the Alnid system looking for repairable derelicts. They will add several ships, fighters, and fast patrol ships to their fleet during this scavenger hunt (until 2295). Meanwhile, the Romulans, with Klingon aid, attempt revenge against the Argonians, but it is an ill deception. Encouraged by Kumerian's success, the D7 "Annihilation," under Captain Kolodian, attempts a similar raid, but is intercepted by the Kzinti carrier "Cutlass".
